On the very edge of a rock on the small island of Giske, Norway, facing an infinite panorama of the unforgivingly raging North Sea, under midnight skies painted in the unpredictably swirling arcs of the Northern Lights, sits the Ocean Sound Recording studio – with snowcapped mountains towering like gallant giants frozen in time around it. In these awe-inspiring surroundings, we found the perfect conditions to help illustrate the unfiltered rawness of the post-metal sound.
This EZX for EZdrummer 3 presents a collection of big, earthy and mercilessly vibrant drums, tailored for atmospheric, slow and organic-sounding metal. It includes four unique kits, two further configurations captured with snare wires off, several extra kit pieces and sets of big and dark cymbals. All instruments were sampled by Thomas Hedlund of the band Cult of Luna, one of the absolute forerunners in today’s budding post-metal scene.
In a genre where feel, context and fearless exploration of ebb-and-flow-like contrasts play equal parts, uncompromising drum dynamics are key. Welcome to the embodiment of just that: an EZX featuring a palette of kits that span the entire dynamic range, recorded at a studio that virtually balances on the edge of the world and against a backdrop of the most savage display of nature’s majesty.
Just like nature once tediously chiseled out this very spot from the face of the earth by thrusting mammoth blocks of ice across its barren crust, this EZX is your modern-day instrument to architect your own musical trails with. It provides the kits, the grooves and the mix-ready sounds for whatever uncharted sonic landscape you may want your next song to venture off into.
Unharness your creativity.
This EZX expansion requires EZdrummer 3 or Superior Drummer 3.

Q: What’s your history with Toontrack and how were you approached about this project?Â
A: I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Toontrack for many years now. Both recording samples and midi packs. Martin, who’s the producer for this release, is a friend of mine and he thought it’d be a fun thing to try explore this genre of music.
Q: Why was Ocean Sound Recording the perfect studio for this EZX?
A: I’ve recorded there with my band Cult of Luna. Our music was meant to work as the musical and sonic foundation for this release. Therefore it made sense to revisit this amazing place. The room is so perfectly built, the surroundings are astonishing and the people working there are the sweetest. It’s just a wonderful place to be creative.Â
Q: When it comes to the kits and cymbals, what was the selective process like and which specific qualities did you try to cover?
A: I had the luxury of consulting Daniel Berglund, who is an old friend of mine and a true drum wizard. He’s been recording stuff for Cult of Luna and has a deep understanding of our musical universe. Basically we wanted to cover a lot of different textures and tones, both when it came to the kits and the cymbals. I love complex and wide cymbal sounds with a good swoosh to them. We also wanted to use dry kits as well as kits with more sustain. The genre is generous when it comes to different sounds and dynamics, which is the reason why we went pretty broad in our selection.Â
Q: In post-metal, maybe more so than in any other genre, dynamics are central and with that, obviously, the groove plays a pivotal role…but also the sound. Explain!
A: Since a lot of song sections in post-metal are instrumental, one needs to approach the drum parts as compositions, more than just focusing on grooves. Although the latter is crucial. Maybe even more so than other metal genres. Trying to find patterns that work for long and sort of meditative parts, and make them evolve. In order to do that, you need a variety of sounds and textures. Â
Q: Throughout your career, shifting between different music styles has been somewhat of a theme. You’ve done anything from mellow and acoustic pop to pummeling post-metal. How do you adapt, both creatively and gear-wise?
A: I’ve been truly fortunate and blessed to having had this opportunity. I’ve been lucky enough to work with band members who really care about the drums; who wants to let the rhythmic ideas become important parts of the overall compositions. That has pushed me to develop my playing in what I hope to be an imaginative way. Gear-wise it’s obviously been different between the bands, so it’s kind of hard to pin down. I’ve used so many different sounds and approaches that it’s hard to find a general concept. I tend to lean towards older kits though, or newer that sounds kind of old. Which is what we’ve aimed for with this release.
Q: To you, what makes a great drum sound?
A: The boring answer is that it depends on the music. But generally I like when the production aspect of recording drums really show. That the sonic dimension is part of the composition.
Q: And what makes a great drummer?
A: Someone who’s playing for the song, but is fearless when it comes to making the drums a crucial part of the composition. That can be done in so many ways, obviously. Sometimes just keeping the backbeat on the hi-har is exactly what the song needs, and the next time it’s all about filling up every imaginable space. So: being adaptable and attentive. But most important is to play with an open soul and a big heart. Emotions are the source from which we get everything creative.
Q: Listening back to the final product, did it come out like you had envisioned?
A:Â It sure did! We tried to find something that was pointing in a specific musical direction. And with that I mean giving the original sounds a lot of personality; making them more extreme if you will. The final product is meant to spark creativity in this genre, however broad it is. I sincerely hope that it will inspire people and open up new musical paths.
The included MIDI was performed by sampling drummer Thomas Hedlund (Cult of Luna) and covers a foundational collection of grooves, fills and parts, enabling you to get started on your next post-metal-inspired song right away.
