The Fields of Rock SDX features seven drum kits and a comprehensive collection of percussion instruments recorded by multiple award-winning engineer/producer/mixer Tom Dalgety (Ghost, Rammstein, Pixies, Royal Blood) and drummer Mat Hector (Iggy Pop, Gutterdämmerung). It was captured at Rockfield, the Welsh dairy farm-turned-into-studio that ended up leaving colossal footprints in its now-fifty-year-long path through music history.
This unlikely studio, to which bands like Queen, Rush, Judas Priest, Hawkwind and many of their contemporaries in the 1970s pilgrimaged, became a creative haven where some of the best rock songs of our time materialized. But even beyond the heydays of classic rock, Rockfield has remained a lynchpin in the recording world, attracting top-tier acts across all genres, like Oasis, Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers, just to name a few.
This SDX sets out to capture the essence of the genre-defining rock albums recorded in the different rooms of the studio, but also to add the modern technology, forward-thinking ideas and ingenuity that take your productions into tomorrow. In addition to using all the great vintage microphones and outboard gear available at Rockfield, the library was recorded through 14 channels of hardware tape emulation, recreating the unmistakable, warm and saturated sound of tape.
This SDX is just as much a nod to the past, an homage to the greats and a respectful bow to the gods of rock as it is a reach into the future. Welcome to a collection of drum tones to last the entire range of rock and beyond.

ARTICULATIONS
With more than a decade at the helm of the console and an already impressive list of records under his belt, it was his production on Royal Blood’s self-titled debut that broke Tom Dalgety’s name onto the international producing scene. The album shot straight to the top of the charts in not only in Tom’s and the band’s native UK, but it also gained massive traction in the US. Shortly after release, it had accumulated platinum sales and earned Tom his 1st mainstream award, the “Breakthrough Producer of the Year” at the UK’s Music Producers Guild. From there on out, Tom has literally been racking up awards back to back. In 2016, he was nominated for “British Producer of the Year” at the BRIT Awards as well as a number 1 hit on the Billboard Rock Album chart with the “Popestar” EP by Ghost. Over the next few years, he was nominated a second time for “UK Producer of the Year” and scored a Swedish Grammis as well as two Grammy Award nominations for “Best Rock Song” and “Best Rock Album” for his work with Ghost.
Known for his organic-sounding productions, ingenious and off-kilter recording techniques as well as his deep-rooted love for the craft, Tom continues to work at the apex of the rock world producing records for the top acts of today’s scene.
Aside from being the longtime timekeeper for Iggy Pop, UK native Mat Hector and his hard-hitting and distinctly edgy groove has found its way onto the star-studded live rock/film show spectacle Gutterdämmerung, tracks by Japanese superstar Hotei and recently, UK’s indie wonder Razorlight. He’s also worked with electro pop icon Thomas Dolby, completing several US and world tours as well as many of his recent records. In addition to being an in-demand drummer for both session work and tours, Mat is also a respected educator and teacher – privately as well as at one of Europe’s most respected music colleges, The Academy of Contemporary Music in the UK.
No matter if a song calls for a pummeling rock groove or a laid-back trainbeat, Mat can adapt. In terms of drumming and artistic expression, he is the textbook definition of versatility.

MD and respected lecturer at the Academy of Contemporary Music
Rockfield has two main recording areas: the Quadrangle and the Coach House. For this SDX, Tom and team recorded in both and also treated parts of the rooms to obtain even more variation. In the end, the different areas, or ‘rooms’ as we call them, were configured as their own libraries – three for drums and one for percussion.
The ‘Live Room’ was recorded in the Quadrangle, which has two main recording spaces with the control room in between them. This was the livelier of the two rooms, with hardwood flooring and more reflective surfaces. The rest of the library, including the percussion part, was recorded in the Coach House, in which the kits were set up in both an area with carpeted floors and heavy drapes covering the walls (‘Dry Room’) as well as one with a reflective stone wall behind the drums (‘Stone Room’).
All in all, you’ll get three contrasting and natural ambiences covering the entire range from loud, lively and hard-hitting down to dry and dampened.

Tom:
This is my nod to the world of arena rock. The main inspirations were Guns N’ Roses’ “Use Your Illusion,” Metallica’s “Black Album” and Aerosmith’s “Pump.” Although the BDC kit we used is brand new, it seemed really well suited to that late ‘80s/early ‘90s bombastic drum sound. I think I even asked Mat to wear a bandana when we were sampling it. The drums for “Bohemian Rhapsody” were recorded in this room, so there’s a certain amount of instant gratification you get just banging a snare in there! It’s also a very similar setup to what we used on Ghost’s “Prequelle.”
Mat:
This was the first time I’d played a BDC kit, and Tom’s choice was spot on for this sound. We used clear pinstripes on this kit, which gave great attack and stick articulation, while maintaining fatness with the double-ply head. To complement the ’80s and ’90s sound Tom was looking for, we used a number of bright, brilliant-finish cymbals to give us a cutting, glassy selection. The bandana was a little uncomfortable, but Tom said I looked cool – I think he was lying.

“I toured this kit for two years with Iggy.”
Mat Hector
Tom:
1968 to 1974 is pretty much the golden age of music for me… and this kit is that period on tap! I’ve always loved the drums on Sabbath, Purple, Cream, The Doors and late The Beatles. Basically jazz kits recorded quite dead/dry, but with a great thickness and weight to the sound. And of course I adore Led Zeppelin too, but it feels like the world already has enough “When the Levee Breaks”-style drum samples. This kit is more in the spirit of their first two records, I suppose.
Mat:
This ’70s Ludwig Maple Classic was one my kits – in fact, I toured this kit for two years with Iggy. I toured with this kit as it delivered that vintage sound you can hear on so many of The Stooges records. Due to the thin shells, it has a naturally low and fat tone, something Tom captured magnificently.

“…some crazy sonic options.”
“…some crazy sonic options.”
Mat Hector
Tom:
This is something I love to do – take a perfectly decent drum kit, cover it in gaffer tape and record it through guitar pedals! Sometimes it works better than others, good examples of where I’ve done this kind of trick are “Loose Change” from the first Royal Blood album and “Was Ich Liebe” by Rammstein. Although it’s quite an odd setup, I think this kit will be very versatile. The distortion will be great for heavy industrial stuff, but the normal channels will be great for fat, glassy T-Rex style sounds.
Mat:
This was a lot of fun to record. Tom created a unique and exciting sound by essentially deconstructing the kit – I loved it! This was actually a kit I had just bought – a ’60s Hayman. They were an English drum company trying to take on the might of Ludwig. They ended up producing drums that were like Ludwig’s, but on steroids! Fat like Ludwig’s, just with more punch and aggression. We paired this kit with Istanbul Agops Dry Dark Xist range, which gives some crazy sonic options.

“It’s a bit more ‘grown-up’ and refined. It probably enjoys Belgian chocolates and Cuban cigars.”
Tom Dalgety
Tom:
This one is more like a late ’70s/early ‘80s flavor. I wanted to make a very crisp but warm sound. Maybe slightly in the vein of Queen, Fleetwood Mac or even AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” It’s a bit more “grown-up” and refined. It probably enjoys Belgian chocolates and Cuban cigars (although not at the same time!). We recorded the Ludwig Colosseum snare with this kit – and that’s one of the highlights of the pack for me!
Mat:
Again, I got to use one of my Iggy touring kits. The “Silver Monster,” as we called it on the road, also has a very cool history. The kit is actually owned by Jos Grain, Iggy’s long-serving roadie – and he’s let me babysit it. Previous to me battering it, Scott Asheton (the original The Stooges drummer) also used this while on the road with Iggy and The Stooges. The kit also spent some time with Rat Scabies. Tom’s treatment of the kit, supported by using coated heads, has definitely brought out the warmness and tonal characteristics from these large, thick-shelled drums.

Tom:
The inspiration for this kit was that big sumptuous tom-heavy sound of ’80s goth records. The Sonor brand is synonymous with that sound. Specifically bands like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Echo and the Bunnymen and Bauhaus (many of whom made records in this exact room). Although that was the main influence behind it, the sound of this kit will work across many genres and styles. I insisted on having a smoke-machine running when we were sampling this kit, but we eventually had to shut it off because it was quite noisy and poor Mat couldn’t see which drums he was hitting!
Mat:
This was an insane kit – a magnificent choice by Tom! It took me about 30 minutes to do one fill all around the toms, haha! Luckily, as there were so many toms, I always managed to hit something – even with the smoke machine set to ’Dickensian London.’ With so many tom options, and a great selection of cymbals (some from my Istabul Agop bag and some from Tom’s magic cymbal bag), you have an insane choice of sounds on this kit.

“This kit also showcases Rockfield’s magic ‘corridor mic’ really nicely!”
Tom Dalgety
Tom:
To be perfectly honest… I had never recorded a Staccato kit before this session! I just saw it at my friend Ken’s house when I went over to look at his Sonor Lite kit. Curiosity got the better of me and I just had to hear it. Turns out, they actually sound really good. As the brand name implies – very punchy! We recorded another of my favorite snares with this kit: the Ludwig Pioneer! This kit also showcases Rockfield’s magic “corridor mic” really nicely!
Mat:
Just like Tom, this was a first for me. These drums looked nuts. However, they sounded really surprising. The way the shells flared out gave them a very directional sound, with tom hits flying off if in all different directions. This kit again had clear pinstripes on, if nothing else to try and control them, but this aided the punchy tone as well. The bass drum was another surprise and was one of my favorite of the weirder-sounding kicks on the session.

“…a solid, modern, industry-standard kit.”
“…a solid, modern, industry-standard kit.”
Tom Dalgety
Tom:
Well … after being amazed that Toontrack let me get away with all my esoteric madness on the other kits, I thought I should give them a solid, modern, industry-standard kit too. I saw an Instagram clip of Mat playing this kit when it had just arrived from Ludwig, and it sounded amazing straight off the phone. It’s vanilla. But it’s good vanilla. Like the vanilla you get inside a Magnum.
Mat:
There’s no accounting for taste, I’ve only ever liked the mint Magnum. Luckily I was hitting drums while the guys were eating all the vanilla Magnums in the control room. So…this beautiful kit was actually made for me to start a new year of touring with Iggy, as well as another band I was playing with at the time (Razorlight). As a result of it being used on two distinctly different gigs, it was aimed at being more versatile than some of my other kits. Then something hit the world and touring and shows stopped for a year or so….and as a result, this kit had not been used live since I picked it up. It was great to hear the wicked sound Tom achieved with the kit, and it was a joy to use it after it being mothballed for a year.

In addition to the more traditionally positioned close microphones, selected kits in this library also offer several options for creative ambiences. For example, the unique Rockfield reverb chamber, the hallway going from one of the control rooms to the studio as well as a “trash” microphone channeled through different chains of outboard and distortion effects.
Superior Drummer 3 and its onboard Mixer offers a staggering amount of features, effects and tools, enabling you to craft custom drum mixes for any sound or style you can imagine. If you’re new to Superior Drummer 3, learn more about its Mixer features here.
To us, sampling sounds for an SDX is more than merely recording instruments. It is the craft of capturing the essence and every unique voice of each instrument to give you, the user, the ability to produce limitless and stunningly real performances.
Due to the complex nature and immense variation in voicing this instrument offers, the hi-hats were recorded with up to 26 unique multi-sampled articulations.
The ride cymbals were sampled with up to eight articulations. Worth noting are the ‘Bow Tip 2’ articulations, which can be used for impressive realism especially when playing the ride cymbals on e-kits with positional sensing technology.
The snares sampled with ‘wires on’ and sticks include eight unique articulations.
The crashes were sampled in up to seven articulations, allowing you to produce anything from subtle crescendos to using any crash cymbal essentially as a leading instrument.
To inspire and enable you to make music immediately, the Fields of Rock SDX includes a broad range of mix-ready presets including 29 settings engineered by Tom Dalgety. These were inspired by the historic records captured in the studio as well as his own signature drum recordings. Additionally, there is a wide range of ready-made mix presets from the Toontrack sound design team.
The included MIDI was performed by Mat Hector and designed to provide the perfect groove base for each of the included kits. In addition to the regular drum grooves, the library also includes a dedicated section for percussion.
