Everything can change from drum to drum, and kit to kit.
I know when I’m doing one, everything is just so fast and frantic. Every minute is spent recording as many drums as possible for the pack, and we usually have unrecorded drums at the end of the time allowed.
Pictures of the set-ups should be ok though, as video/photographers aren’t generally involved in the actual recording.
Regarding Audacity and Windows 7 64 bit, you really need to check Toontrack’s supported hosts list before buying EZdrummer.
I don’t use either, but it’s also not true to say as long as your host supports midi you can use EZdrummer.
Secondly, just to clear up, yes EZdrummer comes with pre-programmed midi, but of course you CAN programme your own drum parts, or edit the midi Toontrack provides.
If you look at each product page, in the ‘details’ section, there is always a list of what is included.
All the SDX and EZX packs include both new sounds (which comprise new samples aka kits) and new midi.
If you don’t need midi just ignore it. I see the midi as a freebie.
The list of drums and cymbals sampled, and available to you when you buy the product, is listed on each product page (Superior and EZdrummer expansions).
Yeah, it’s just frustrating because I’ve always said we had the hip-hop scene, Daptones, alternative (Beck) and samplist/electronica (Air, Portishead) sound very much in mind when we set out to create Custom & Vintage. Of course we needed to cover some mainstream pop bases as well.
I grew up in the 70’s, Peter was active on the high-end studio scene when a lot of these classic recordings were made.
At the time we proposed C&V to Toontrack, the big names in drum sampling were DFH Superior and BFD, both targeting the mainstream pop and rock sound.
So a little credit to us for understanding the alternative market, and bigger credit to Toon for putting the money and logistics up to create the product.
I now give no credit to someone who ignores repeated advice to try the product before determining it doesn’t hit the mark, and who now posts links to other producers he claims are hitting the mark.
Roman, you can’t start any more of these discussions because you don’t understand what you are criticising or offering alternatives to.
For the record, a long time ago he started numerous threads on Gearslutz talking about Superior and how it needed to cater for the funk, rap, reggae, classic 70’s scene. So my interaction with Roman extends over many months.
ORIGINAL: fizbin
I hope you can get what you want one day, but for now all those sounds are in C&V. You just need to get in there and pull them out with your own mixing.
Yep.
Months ago Romanp claimed he had bought C&V, but just hadn’t installed it yet. I’m beginning to wonder.
Totally weird that someone would post the same request for months, almost monthly, without acknowledging most of what they are requesting has already been delivered.
Possibly the closest in ethos would be EZX: The Classic or EZX: Jazz.
It’s been a while since I loaded the jazz package up.
The Classic has ringier toms on the Craviotto kit, plus a four mic set-up.
The drums ‘fizbin’ loaded from C&V were definitely the right way to go too.
You need a soft sounding bass drum. Higher tuned ringy toms. Very few mics on the kit.
It’s sort of a bridge between traditional a jazz drum sound and the beginnings of hard rock.
The problem is, very few of those concepts are relevant today. So most drum packs are addressing contemporary needs. Full and fat toms, big and in your face bass drums.
The most competitive pricing is definitely from online retailers, especially those based in the USA.
So use Google and have a look around at pricing (also those US sites linked to above by redlogic).
If need be, http://www.xe.com is an exchange rate site.
I think you could do it. Just use one snare mic, one kick mic, and play around with the various overhead and room mic options in each SDX.
Many libraries have one mono ambient mic nearer the kit for example.
You could end up using just 3 mics, or 5 mics. Who cares if it recreates the sound you are after.
Interesting that you think C&V is ‘an American vibe’ and not a ‘super small room’.
The Classic does not sound like drums rockin’ in a big room, but yes, they aren’t completely dry and yes there are no brushes or rods.
I think you would find it a useful addition if you could pick it up during one of those occasional sales. Wasn’t it just selling for $40?
You can’t go back and add to any drum library.
Mic positions change, levels on the console, a whole bucket load of variables that would make the additions unmatchable with the already recorded audio.
Have you heard the original C&V yet? I know you said you had it on order.
C&V covers a lot of retro soul and funk territory, as well as the contemporary artists who are influenced by that sound.
I don’t see the point of posting lists of classic funk albums unless they specifically illustrate something Toontrack don’t have in their product line.
