Subtractive EQ’ing is definitely the way forward, but then again nothing is linear when sitting under a compressor…
Either way, the tone of the snare maybe nice, but the avatar kit is so widely used these days and the mix is really not supporting it, sounds very much like a guitarist mixed this….
Also is there any sidechaining at all setup in the mix???

Can you not just use MM for the cymbal swell?
Either move the note on the MIDI track to a corresponding cymbal, or change the trigger note from inside MM to receive the pre-programmed one?
Aside from that, gotta get superior for sample mixing/matching, unless you’re running the really old DFH standalone in which case why not just load that onto a separate track and treat it as you would any other additional VSTi…..

Normally pan the overheads in line with the kit piece?

Several things
there is an overall velocity control on superior, check the “grooves tab”, if you want “all hard hits” for your play back, then you can just select the midi track that was created and bump all the midi data up to velocity 127.
But I think it raises a slightly larger issue in that you’re retaining ZERO dynamics, so essentially if that’s how you want the sound then I’d suggest some kind of track slamming limiter on the drums output buss and leave the midi in it’s current state to at least allow the drum samples to represent the dynamics (what’s left) even if the volume sounds like continual hard hits.

Well that’s a host DAW, so the workflow is totally subjective based on your own personal requirements, I would be asking “what am I looking to do to speed/improve things up that cubase doesn’t allow me to…..”
If you’re looking for automated beat generators, there’s great tools out there, Groove Agent, Jamstix, etc

Gotta 2nd mr braner’s opinions, with the host of gear we’ve used and had access to I still fondly remember this little unknowing PCi card was as a solid as a rock.

To be honest, even things like groove and iterative quantizing only help for a small snippet, never an entire track, the only thing I can suggest is to set something like 100 midi velocity (or whatever figure) on as a default input value for your tool, rather than pencilling in from absolute scratch, other techniques of grouping notes and using velocity additions help bring certain sections up, trust me, even when a drummer has done programming a track there are *still* edits to be made to suit the mix in terms of velocities, it’s such a hugely organic process and there really aren’t any short-cuts just a combination of quick access keys and alot of patience.
That or get the guy to play on v-drums and auto quantize the incoming midi data?…
Anywho, it’s a painful task, but you’ll reap the benefits in the end.

I think you’ll find they are trying to pitch themselves as SSD equivalents, i.e. drumagog files for DRT within a mix context

No, you’re looking to have the tracks all playing the same part but recorded individually, i.e. no copy/paste situation, it’s the subtle variances that between channels that creates the “wall of sound” you can look into latency based plugins such a freehaas etc but these more often than not don’t really cut the mustard as they are a linear way of approaching the same sound.
Kind regards

My point exactly, I’m betting it was a commercial decision or a competitor that forced a hand…

So ironically, this software now would only be available to the pirates? Awesome…..

Can you not just open up the in-lane editor on the drum track and start drawing in the notes and velocities, that’s how we do it in cubase 🙂

Platinum samples, slamtracks?

With the groove monkey beats, did you by any chance have an issue on the metal or prog ones where the snare was being played back as a rimshot by any chance?

On the guitars stick a peak level meter on the input track before and after the effects chain, on the drums channel you want to either put it on the drum group output/submix or on each of the individual outputs you’ve created, again before and/or after the fx on each channel
Basically you’re looking to make sure there are no peaks on the input to your fx so that clipping etc won’t occur within the plugins from receiving too hot a signal, and likewise afterwards helps you understand if you’ve maintained unity gain etc.
All this information should start to give you an indication of which parts need mild compression (overheads etc) and which might need some compression and even a limiter on the bus to stop the wild transients (e.g. toms etc)
Hope that helps!
