Sorry man but this just isn;t doing it for me, the guitars seem out of time, I mean don’t get me wrong I’m getting the sludgey vibe but it’s just not sounding tight, and man seriously, the kick… the snare… not sounding like they are adding anything to the mix except plastic overtones…

Maybe I’m just missing something, what are people listening to tracks on?

    Hello there,

Just a couple of suggestions, firstly look at the envelopes maybe just reduce the attack marginally to suit, also mix a small amount of snare wire bleed from the kick drum, as for compressors, I’ve always like the crysonic sprectraphy, you tend to want some bottom end, try adding a slope around 45-125hz might help offset the top-end a touch

See what the parallel bus compression is doing, sometimes the kick can hit too hard through there, a bit more clarity from the kick can be found again from the sidechaining of other instruments.

Aside from that have you tried adding a small amount of overdrive or distortion to the kick? On some of the better ones you can run a freq pass and tune in the top end break up to soften the highs and give the kick and more “paddy” feel

Dunno if any of that is of any help…

    Hey GORILLA!

Just going back over what I read, and I still wanted to apologise if I came across too harsh, I was pretty full on!

Anyways, do you have an update on it yet, would be cool to hear more!

    Hey buddy!

Lovin’ the tones as always, nice feel, always a big fan of those “threat signal” type mid-riff dives

Just thinking what I’m hearing, not claiming it to be gospel but i think the guitars could do with a touch more room, not much it’s just they feel ever so slightly too upfront, but also I would say maybe bring the bass guitar up a touch aswell, bring a bit more meat in around 80-125hz might give you a touch more spine to the already quite heavy duty snippet 🙂

    Hey GORILLA,

    Is this YOUR stuff??? :-S

Right not being brutal but i think aside from the mix, i think you’re going to struggle getting much definition as there seems to be an inherent timing issue between the guitars and drums…

Aside from that it’s lacking consistancy, the drums are sort of coming in and out of the mix, i’d said sidechain the guitars off the kick a lil, that’ll give it some breathing space, after that, get some more low end on the drums, the guitars have waaay more freq’s going on, perhaps a lil low end roll off on the twangers?

The snare also seems to be peaking and the cymbals aren’t as crisp as they could be, i think the guitars are dominating the mix a touch for the moment..

If you’re not already doing parallel buss compression on the drums, maybe worth a shot, are you already? and what about overall reverb have you given the mix it’s own room to help gel all the components?

Certainly wasn’t aiming to be rude but i’m sure I’ve heard stuff from you before and this seemed like a major league leap backwards

Hmmmm I dunno, when mixing it’s all about A) knowing YOUR reference speakers, their foibles and all and B) hopefully having something good enough to actually *hear* the freq’s you are working with… we use crossovers, and the problem is you may mix bass light but that’s about tuning your listening environment, add a nice fat curve around 65-75hz sloping down at around 110hz and you’d be amazed the perceived low end and depth it adds to the mix, it needent be boomy just has to be tuned with your environment and ears aware of any inherent problems, the main issue people have is with phase amplification or cancellation due to the standing waves which is normally more apparently in lower freq systems. The problem is if your speakers can’t produce the low freq’s at any useable volume and you want to tweak your sound, which when looking at running lower Hz the difference of 1Hz either way can start having a bigger impact then a sub is definitely the way to go in my humbe opinion….

    but…

    ORIGINAL: ajxtjs

By the way don’t bother buying a sub for mixing purposes, they’re notoriously terrible and won’t give you a clear picture of the mix at all.

I do however take issue with the above, that’s SUCH a sweeping and unfounded statement and frankly the internet is crammed with those already, would you mind offering a little legitimate backup and maybe provide some resource to support your statement?

    Hey dude!!!

Cool track, definitely loving the sound and vibe!

Can I be a complete dick and suggest something creative for the track?

Please no offence just felt randomly compelled to suggest something as a fellow writer just to see what ya thought really

Basically I was thinking in the sections where the guitars and drums are on there own (verse??) with that rather gnarly “gakka gakka” section the bass only comes back in when that motif has finished and the chords come in and then 2nd time round the bass mimics the guitar pauses and all…

I was wondering if you’d thought/tried having the bass out of the mix for the first 2x round of the guitar riff within a section then having the bass mimic the guitar part the second 2x time of the riff, *then* when the section comes round for it’s variation (i’m assuming it’s a kinda 2+2 block verse structure?) bringing in the bass with a more continual (albeit variation) riff to push through the section for the next change, might sound kinda nice and dark having the drums and bass out on their own for those pauses in the guitar?

So basically for the 8 or sixteen times of that riff, have 25% still as it was with the riff playing along with the drums and without the bass the next 25% has the bass come in and copy the guitar and the last remaining 50% the bass playig something like an 8th note or 16th note groove to play under the guitar riffs….

I dunno man, just randomly brainstorming hehehe

    Ello all,

    Fab Filter – Pro-Q

Reason for use? Good EQ, relatively low latency even with the phase alignment switched on, good VU and the ability to see changes occurring as you make them. Also it’s true stereo which is nice 🙂 (once you got the fabfilter pack, you get a great bunch of other plugs aswell)

    Crysonic – SpectraPhy

Great brickwall limiter limiter, whatever it does, it just sounds great for basic mixes, seeing how the track will handle mastering and works great on the parallel drum buss, good for the gluing process and seeing what’s sounding off

And because you picked a “pack of plugins” up there in the beginning (and because I can’t decide hehehe)….

Focusrite midnight/scarlett plugin pack – solid tools, great sounds, can’t really be overused and a deffo go to pack for mastering….

Oh there are soooooooooooo many I could list that have been important for “just that little section” of a song, this is kind of a moot thread really.

It’s nice to find out what others use, but me and the other guitarist often have this discussion and I think it all comes down to the useability of any given application, sure the ones with nicer GUI’s etc might get looked at first but you really gotta get the principals down and see which plugs (if any) suit YOUR ears and YOUR tastes

    Know your plugs!!!

Hey thanks Airheard, it’s always nice to hear someone enjoys something we’ve worked hard to create – gotta admit it’s been fun for us all though.

We’ve put a slightly different master up on soundclick – http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9718965 giving it a bit more low end and punch, just wondered if you guys would be able to have a listen and see what you think, aside from that, we have loads of new material coming so we’ll definitely keep everyone posted, and it’s nice to see so much activity on the forums of late!

    Kind regards

    Hi buddy!

To be honest, I reckon you’re pretty much there, couple of things, I know music never has to be exact, but I would say bring the snare a bit more forward, get a bit more bottom in there, drop a bit of bass off the toms, and after that maybe thin out the guitars a touch then bring the whole mix up to suit on the master bus (bit of a bodge way of doing it, but gets results easily for testing) also the only other thing I would say and please don’t take offence but if you’re doubling guitars I would work more with a gate on the sound and just lining up left and right channels a touch more, the recording doesn’t has to be spot on, in fact that’s half of what you’re looking for – check out the following two links to see that you can get a huge but yet still tight sound using the Haas effect to your advantage….
