A lot of the grooves I have looked at have the velocities on the kick set quite high. Many of them set at 127. With the humanize features on, I think it sounds pretty natural.
The waves stuff is alright. I had a UAD card for awhile (stolen, boo) and the 4K channel strip was very good for drums. The waves stuff is definitely not as warm, but it can make things cut nicely. Sonalksis plugs are my go to plugs for all things surgical. I have to say that I just finished a Metal foundry drum mix using the built in S2.0 plugs, and it was absolutely smoking! I was also able to dial in the mix really fast as well, so don’t disregard these bad boys.
