P.S – Hitmaker is now my favourite SDX of all time. Sounds are just awesome so this is now my “go to” SDX. Something about it just resonates with me – probably in part as I am huge fan of Sting/Police and as drummers – Vinnie, Stewart and Manu.

Thanks for the response but I can only find an option for a Richard Petty Kick and cannot find option for Richard Petty Snare to swap out like you have indicated in the Insimmonable Touch preset.

With the 8 articulations loaded performance should be very good and in normal playing situations extremely close to acoustic hi-hats. With the later Superior Drummer 3 libraries a lot of effort has gone into capturing the transitions from closed to open that give the most realistic performance with e-drums. During editing and development of these libraries we also A/B with acoustic hi-hats to try to get the most authentic performance (some of the hi-hats in the later SDX’s are from my own personal collection so this makes the process of A/B’ing a little easier). Of course we are always looking at new technology and ways of improving things but I really believe the new E-drum Optimised setting provides a great alternative to the default especially with moving hi-hats.

Regarding cross-fading, we have discussed this in the past but playing two samples simultaneously could potentially create extra problems such as phase and comb-filtering issues. It is also a compromise in its own way as you are doubling the sound of physical interaction of the two cymbals at the mid-point. That’s not to say it isn’t an area worthy of further exploration.

Just wondering if Toontrack has given any consideration to crossfades for Hi Hat articulations. I still find that I cannot get truly realistic Hi Hat performance on both gentle/gradual opening and closing unless I use the MintBerry Crunch Hi Hat fix through my DAW – this is an excellent option but obviously does not work in standalone SD3 .

I am keen to understand if Toontrack is looking at developing a more realistic Hi Hat performance  – especially for Yamaha type Hi Hat controllers that are not as sophisticated as the latest Roland options.

This is the only thing that limits me from getting a 100% real acoustic sound from SD3 and fixing this would absolutely put SD3 at the “Top of the tree”. Thanks, Andrew

I am an E-drummer with the older Yamaha DTX900 module that has 3 triggers on each of 12 inputs (incl toms, snare, cyms, “spare pads”) so 36 – plus the Kick, Hi-hat triggers (5) and an additional single input so I have 43 triggers on my edrums with following pads – kick, RHH135 Hats, 5 x 3 zone “toms”, 2 x 3 zone snares, 5 x 3 zone “cymbals” plus a mono pad I use as a cowbell. Great setup for a large kit and I use tom rim triggers for octobans/rototoms.

I manually map any new SDX kit to match my module outputs and save this under my own “project” and Kit – see attached screen shot where I have mapped a higher tuned tom to C2 and F#4 (rimshot) to match my module output notes for these pads. Only have to do it once for each new SDX and I can then swap out instruments (and user instruments) as needed – also across SDX libraries for additional sounds.

I am an e-drummer and have a large modified Yamaha DTX900 kit that is set up with 5 toms and 5 x 3 zone cymbal pads. I map all my SDX kits the same way and have had a lot of success with extra Toms to give a 5 tom set up for all my own kits. Attached is a screen shot of one of my Rooms of Hansa Vocal Booth Kits (as it has the smallest number of actual instruments). I have added all the rest and by altering Tom tuning/EQ/Transients/channel bleeds etc I am getting a very realistic 5 tom sound. I also add and route cymbals and Rides to their own channels to better control the sounds. You can do so much with SD3 if you put in the time. cheers, Andrew
