Here’s a pretty good link to someone that did this very thing. http://www.vdrums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=329543#post329543
Here’s a program that works with the rock band set. I don’t know how interchangeable it is. I just found it with google.
ORIGINAL: flipotto
Hey Jman,
I am still working with the sensitivity..
However, I did move the large piezo to the outside of the box, about an inch from the edge of the bottom of the ecymbal.
It is working pretty good, I still need to get used to when the edge will trigger.
Also the jack inside there is very very cheap… I had to repair that is several places, I really need to just buy a new jack, and get rid of the circuit board.
From the looks of it you should be able to do that fairly easily. That’s a pretty small area to get the triggers to work separately. Hope you get it dialed in. The larger piezo will usually be more sensitive than the smaller ones, so I would put that on the location that you will be striking most often. You should be able to remove that jack from the board and solder your wires directly to it.

Well, I was going to say that there was a good chance that they would be to close together and that you would probably end up triggering both of them, but it sounds like you got it covered. Congrats!
Jman
Also check the gain setting of that particular trigger input. It may be set very low.
InsaneGenious, I was wondering if you ever completed this project? Do you have any photos of what you did? I am very interested in attempting this as I am trying to design a complete diy set that functions as good as a professional set for as little dough as possible. I have already built a complete set that cost me about $600 including a alesis dm-5 module, but I think I could do the whole project for around $100. This controller mod would be the icing on the cake!
Please let me know if you still frequent this site.
Thanks
Jman
There should be a setting in your module to cut down on cross talk. Mine goes into it in the manual.
I would say as far as a module goes from my reading you get what you pay for. I ordered an Alesis DM-5 off ebay but I’m still waiting for it so I can’t give you any feed back. You might try going to musiciansfriend.com and looking what people have wrote feedback about the different modules that they offer and then either buy it there or try to find it on ebay.
I ordered my cables from a guy on ebay. I got 12 various length used cables for $36 w/ shipping and cut them and resoldered the ends to the lengths I needed.
The piezos I ordered from here. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=3202&TabID=1&C=SO&U=strat350&doy=search&MenuName=PIEZO+TRANSDUCERS
Here’s a good list of resources and forums that will help tremendously. http://www.edrums.info/information.htm
Good luck. Expect it to be more work than you expected. but its fun and rewarding.
Here’s a good link where this is discussed in depth. Sounds like some pretty good ideas.
I just wire a jack to mine and plug it into a guitar amp. Tap it a couple of times and you will know right away if its working. I would keep the volume on the amp at a low level when you plug it in though.
