wow waterboy!!
thanks for breaking the ice here…..
glad you dig it.
walked away was fun to track, and i enjoyed digging into the mixer section of the superior drummer interface on this.
i mixed thru the SD mixer, output to just 2-track.
i’m now experimenting with getting the sounds close in the mixer, but then outputting to individual tracks and bouncing the audio.
there are 3 tunes on the album that feature the SD kits….
“Walked Away” (from “The Time is Magic”)
http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bb02-walked-away
this is recorded and mixed in sonar, mastered in wavelab with Waves linear phase eq, LINMB, S1 and L2
glad to answer any gear or mix questions, comments always welcome.
new years bump!
check the song previews for a quick overview of the use of the superior drums….
thanks bridger!
it was a fun track to do, since all this werewolf imagery was VERY easy to tap into.
i tried to play the rhythm guitar parts as if a werewolf were scratching them out!
LOL
same with the vox, it’s supposed to be all angst.
the dude is so phucked, and he knows it!
hello in sarasota!
heheh
used to play in sarasota, years back….
i grew up in jax.
anyways, thanks for checking it out!
this is the first time i played drums using a keyboard……
just layering it up, a couple of pieces at a time..
so i was curious to see how it came across to others using this method.
normally, i drag and drop, then edit in piano view, in sonar..
then, i re-use my edited clips here and there, and continue to edit so i don’t replicate the same clip too many times, because people can recognize memorable drum riffs…
the guitars:
i record mono tracks, and the only way i typically use them, is simply panned left and right.
sometimes, i’ll add a short delay of a few milliseconds, and throw the dry track left, the delayed track right, and get a ‘stereo’ spread that way, just to fatten a track…
but on this one, i just panned them. i didn’t hard pan them, i think they’re at about 75% left and right, so there is some bleed…
thanks chuck!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
new version: “THE PAYMENT”
this one has new rhythm guitar parts (did em last night) that are done on the clean channel of a driven mesa boogie…
opened up the sound of the mix quite a bit..
but more midrangy…
http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/payment-ver4
this is an older tune i did some years back…
and dumped the original tracks into sonar, to re-work it.
but this year, i stripped the old drum track off…
and literally played this one, using a maudio keyrig keyboard, in real time…
i used 3 midi tracks…
one for kick/toms, one for hi hats and tom fills, and one for cymbal work.
so 3 performances, stacked on top of each other, to get the entire drum track done.
LAST NIGHT…..
i had an opportunity to do some fresh guitar tracking.
so i DITCHED the (2) heavy rhythm guitar parts, left and right..
they’re gone. toast.
and RE-RECORDED the rhythm guitar part, using a single track, and using a very cleaned up lead channel on the boogie.
i was going for a cleaner chimey grindy part, and it came out very nice.
i just haven’t had time to mix it yet…
i’ll try to do that tonight, and post it tomorrow.
it COMPLETELY CHANGED the feel of the thing…..
it let the tom work ring out much better, brought out more AIR in the mix, and made everything so much clearer.
in fact, it has made me re-think my rhythm guitar tone entirely.
scott-
thanks for checking this one out.
and timely comments…..
‘too roomy’.
yes.
the ambient mics, are very powerful.
so i’ve gone in, and done what you suggested, i’ve cut out the bleed on the kick and snare….
at least enough, to make an audible difference.
i’ll tell you, the power of the combination of mics, bleed, and individual fx on the varying channels of the kit, is almost overwhelming.
but i dig it.
the control of the envelope for each drum kit…… yes.
i found a kick sound i loved, but it rang out too much…
i thought it was the room mics, but even turned off, it was too much.
then i discovered that envelope control, i brought the length of decay of the drum hit down (shorter) and voila.
at this point, i’ve got about 6 variations on the one ‘master’ kit i’m trying to build, with all kinds of experiments on varying amounts of eq, compression, gating,
well, i got superior loaded.
re-did the drums on this, with the new AVATAR studio kit….
sounds great.
24 bit files DO make a difference.
AND
the files are more ‘raw’ sounding than the ezdrummer.
meaning, i can’t just take the stock sounds and run with them…
i’ve got to treat each and every piece of the kit as if it were a studio recording…
most all the pieces need EQ, Compression, and at times, high/low pass, and then routing to appropriate sub busses with levels of eq and compression/limiting on them.
i experimented most of the weekend, with different scenarios, it’s going to take a while, for me to determine what works best, because there are so many options.
for example, there are (3) kick drum ouputs.
one is sub mic, the other two are inside and outside mics.
they completely interact with each other, and the sub is very powerful.
if you’re not careful, with a raw sub track, it will DESTROY your headroom!!
LOL
learned that the hard way.
i never had SUB mic tracks on drums before, in analog, so that really is a new trick for me.
but man, does it round out the kick sound nicely.
very dangerous.
so, i’m going to re-tweak this one altogether, and compare the versions.
but i’m digging superior so far.
gonna have to up my RAM tho, i’m getting dropouts from using a huge kit and tons of bleeds….
