I am about to venture into the DIY e-drum world. My question is whether I need to decide on an Alesis or Roland Module first before i start my building. I have read that the Alesis has only mono inputs and the Roland has Stereo. Does that mean if I want to trigger the rim I would need two inputs for each drum on the Alesis?
Any info would be great.
I’d recommend Roland’s stuff – it is more expensive than some others but you get what you pay for.
If you can, buy a TD12; The TD20 isn’t worth the extra money for use with S2.
If you’re tight for cash, buy the bottom end module (TD3?), then expand it later with a TMC6.
In any case, I would decide on the module/brain before planing out the kit.
I am not an atomic playboy.
What he said or if you can find a TD-8, you could go with that as a MIDI trigger. You should be able to find a TD-8 in the $500US price range or less. I upgraded to the TD-12 from a TD-8 before I caught the MIDI bug and would have stuck with the TD-8 had MIDI happened earlier for me.
without recommending one manufacturer over the other, I wanted to point out that the Alesis Trigger I/O most certainly provides dual Inputs. I believe you can even specify the type (piezo/piezo, piezo/switch, etc) on an input basis.
All that to say that the info you were provided elsewhere is either inaccurate, incomplete or pertaining to an old/other module.
