USB Interfaces/ASIO Drivers

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone is having the issue I’m having. I’m using the Focusrite 2i2 interface with my Roland kit and I recently downloaded the 4.36.4 driver because the original driver was making SD3 crash instantly when I tried to adjust the ASIO settings. That is what Focusrite’s tech support told me to do and it worked, but I’m getting a lot of popping sounds while playing and it’s driving me nuts. I’ve tried adjusting the settings and I’m getting nowhere. This is occurring when I use the 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports on my laptop. Is this an issue with my computer or the driver? I have an HP 8GB laptop with an Intel i5 processor which I believe meets the requirements of SD3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Josh,

are you using the standalone version of SD3? I had some issues with ASIO and SD3 too (not with a Focusrite interface, but with the Roland ASIO driver). I switched from standalone SD3 to using the VST and all trouble was gone.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I am using SD3 in standalone. I wonder why that would be the problem? Perhaps the folks at Toontrack can help here? Is this an issue with SD3 or is it a driver/computer issue?

My advice is to test with a VST host. If the problem still exists, it is most likely a driver issue. If the problem is gone, you can hardly assign it to anyone specific, neither SD3 nor driver or computer.

I’ll give it a shot. Is the one you’re using easy to install and use? I’m not too good with this stuff which is why I stick to standalone software if I can. Anything I need to know before installing it? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

It’s easy to use. You don’t need to install something, just unpack and start. Then choose “New plugin” ans select the SD3 plugin. Next set MIDI and audio devices and you’re done.

Hey Reiner,

Hate to keep bugging you, but I downloaded this and extracted it to my desktop. There’s just a bunch of weird files though. Not sure how to start it. What am I missing here? Sorry man. Like I said, I’m not good with this stuff at all. Thanks!

I got the VST host to work, but it doesn’t see SD3 as an option for a plug in. Thanks though.

Have you checked that the audio issues only occur for Superior Drummer 3 in standalone mode?
Does it sound bad when you:
– run plugins in DAWs, like cubase or similar?
– run Superior Drummer 3 in a DAW?
– Is it a difference if you increase the buffer size in Superior Drummer 3 Audio Device settings? Try something like 1024 – it increases the latency, but offloads the audio processing…

I am asking because these kind of problems almost always comes from the audio device/drivers/computer, or similar… It can of course be SD3 causing this, but we need to rule out the most common sources first 🙂

Yes I’ve tried all buffer settings. I’m only hearing the popping sounds now right after I stop playing. I just hear pops as the drums/cymbals ride out almost every time I stop. Pretty annoying.

I don’t have a DAW so I’ve only been using SD3 in standalone, but if it only occurs in standalone that would be an SD3 issue correct?

I’m using the Focusrite 2i2 interface and the buffer size options are 1-10. I’ve tried all of these and the only thing that changes is the latency. Popping sounds occur as the drums/cymbals ride no matter what setting I use. I noticed tonight that the popping sounds do not occur when I load EZX expansions though. I tried removing some of the extra room mics on one of the SD3 presets I made (SD3 library), but I still hear them. What’s odd is that it doesn’t happen on some of your included presets. It’s kind of hit or miss and I just don’t get it. Again, my laptop is 8GB and it’s 64-bit which is what the SD3 requirements are on your website.

Have you had any other complaints about this?

I haven’t seen a lot of support issues but I’m not sure the number of Focusrite interfaces I’ve come across though.
