Trying to get set up again

I’m not completely new to recording. I had ProTools DigiDesign 001 almost 20yrs ago. Then I was in a classic rock band with my friends. My friend who played drums, had a 5pc Perl Export Drum set. I purchased a Alessis D4, and after replacing the junk triggers with some still inexpensive but seemed to work much better triggers DDrums Red’s, it seemed to work great once we got it adjusted, never had much problem with it at all, made things easier than trying to Mic them, just plug them in and go. We recorded a few songs, and I believe I recorded them MIDI in the ProTools, so we could play with the drum sets, and bounce them back in after we had the right sound we wanted on each. Anyway….

I just got a New/Old Mac 5.1 Eight Core, I had purchased ProTools 11, the Avid Eleven Rack, and SuperiorDrummer 2.0 around two years ago. Just got a Desk and Monitors set up. I figured that I could use the D4, trigger the drums, and record the drums MIDI with the MIDI in’s on the Eleven Rack and use SuperiorDrummer for a good sound. I would love to have a really good Roland kit, or a real expensive good sounding maple shell kit, but all that is just not in the cards at the moment. I was thinking I already have the D4 and SuperiorDrummer so why not try to get things to work good and keep it as inexpensive as possible because I don’t have much money at the moment.

What I was thinking about doing, because no one likes the junky acoustic set I have at the moment, is spending a few hundred and getting a used Pearl Export 7pc drums set and 2 more triggers and maybe a month or two getting a used double bass pedal. Maybe getting some mesh 2-ply heads and some foam to quiet them down as much as possible. They could use the D4 for practice, I have some JBL mains and floor monitors, so they can get a OK sound for just practice. But for recording running the MIDI out of the D4 and recording with ProTools and using SuperiorDrummer for the tracks. Does that sound like a OK idea? or am I way off?
