Finally got Superior Drummer 2 and Roots about a week ago, and I’m now putting together a custom keymap so that I can more comfortably sequence out drum parts in Pro Tools.
I’ve never been a drummer, but I’ve been sequencing drums for years, particularly with BFD. So when it comes to hi-hats I’m familiar with “tip” and “shank” in visualizing what part of the drum stick is being used to strike the hat. I’m a bit confused now, however, in reading the articulations for the hi hats in Superior Drummer.
For example, in the brushes kit from the Roots expansion pack, we have the articulations open 1-5 and open tip 1-5. My first instinct was that the “tip” articulations referred to hits made by the tip of the drum stick, whereas the articulations simply labeled “tight” or “open” implied hits made with the shank or shaft of the drum stick. One forum post I read seemed to suggest, however, that “tip” in this case referred to the physical location on the hi-hat as opposed to what part of the stick hits the hat.
Can anyone help clarify what hi-hat articulations like “open” vs “open tip” refer to? I understand that ultimately it’s the sound of the articulation that really matters, not the name, but nevertheless I want to be able to visualize exactly what each articulation is so that I can more realistically program drum parts.
“Open” is played by hitting with the shank at the edge of the hihat.
“Open Tip” is played with the tip of the stick at the bow of the hihat.
And yes, the nomenclature is confusing.
