I’ve used Toontrack for years. The issue I have is that most of their beats are heavy metal and rock. I play neither. They are sorely lacking when it comes to grooves like soul, R&B, funk.
I want grooves along the lines of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, smooth jazz – old school soul, funk, R&B. Nice smooth grooves. They have none. And do some horn band grooves. There are a lot of soulful, funky, R&B artists to listen to to get good ideas from.
Toontrack’s Funkmasters is pretty bad (as in not good). Too much repetition of the same bad groove.
They need to stop having a ton of grooves all playing basically the same thing, with only a kick or snare variation here or there (but is still the same beat). Have a lot of different souful, funky, R&B grooves in one MIDI pack.
When I look for grooves in my Toontrack collection (and I have a lot), there’s nothing. I usually have to make my own from scratch. I haven’t bought a MIDI groove from them in a long time. And I won’t again until they get better grooves that people like me can use.
