Hey all,
I just finished a video demonstrating DFHS with a RET kit and the Alesis IO box. It’s working great and I thought I’d share.

Enjoy
Fantastic demo Tony – looks like you’ve got the drums working really well with dfhs
(I really like the Beatles medley too!)

Very nicely done!
Question about the Trigger iO. First, what hihat foot controller are you using, and second, how good is the range from tight through through the levels of closed/openess?
I have the Roland FD-7 with MIDI signal generated by the Roland TD-10 brain, and it goes from tight to open 4 a bit quick. Getting though inbetween sounds is kind of tricky. (and I know it is the hardware itself, because it has the same behavior when I used to use the TD-10 for HiHat sounds).
I’m using the FD8 foot controler. It seems pretty good, although, i’ve only had the kit for 2 weeks and there is still plenty of tweeking to be done. The hi hat has so many subpad options and I don’t know what they are all for. For example, what are the Seq hit options for?
Great video Tony,
the Seq hits are hits picked from actual played sequences, soft and hard. When playing e-drums, you only use the HatsTrig, HatsTipTrig and HatsBellTrig (depending on Superior product and equipment used to trigger) to trigger and then the HatsCtrl to control the openess.

I tried using only the controls you mentioned and had not control of the hats. it played closed notes no matter where my pedal was and produced no foot chick sound. I found I have to map the notes to closed and open and the pedal slots in DFH to make it work. Does this make sense?
this would indicate that the Alesis does not support continuous controller messages, which would be typical of alesis TMC devises… but, if I must be honest, exceedingly disappointing for a product hitting the shelves in 2007.
Anyway keep up the good work, the video was very inspiring, even for us who need no convincing.

btw, are you sure you are mapping your triggers (snare specifically) to the ‘right’ articulation. I could not help but notice some machine gunning unusual at the drumming rates of some of your rolls.

Everything I’ve read and heard so far (product manual, other demos and user comments) does indicate that a continuous controller is supported for variable HiHat pedal response. But that the variable response is selectable as a config choice, it will also do On/Off. I’ll know more soon, my Trigger iO is now on its way to me.

It does send MIDI CC data (CC4). I can see it in Cubase when I record. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I’ve done some tweeking since the video and I have a much more natural, smooth response now. Perhaps, when the schedual permits, I’ll shoot another vid of the current state of my setup.

you may have cleared the assignments of the HatsCtrl subpad? without seeing your .dfh or Cubase project it is hard to imagine any other cause.

Rogue,
Can I send you my .dfh and Cubase project? Maybe you can see where I’m going wrong.
Tony, nice work. I just got DFHS in today and am working on setting it up with my trigger IO, any chance you can post your .dfh’s as they’re refined? I can set you up with an FTP if need be.
