Resistors or no

I’m looking to convert my alesis dm5 pro heads to mesh heads, swapping the piezos out and placing a foam cone in. I’ve read of people removing the stock resistors attached to the jack and others say leave them in. What exactly do the resistors do, and what are the pros/cons of removing them or keeping them. Thanks for any help.
