Considering the very specific mic placement requirements of any particular drum set and the different requirements of a large mic setup vs a 4 mic setup I would imagine this would be impossible to do properly but I thought I’d ask if anyone has gotten a decent emulation out of the standard libraries. Just removing from the mix all the mics except the kick, snare, and overheads wouldn’t be the same since in a large contemporary multi mic setup those four mics are going to be placed in relation the the rest of the mics to avoid problems one wouldn’t have with only 4 mics.
"Let us wander through a great modern city with our ears more attentive than our eyes..."
Luigi Russolo, 1913
Haven’t tried this but what about using those four mics and adding a short room reverb or short delay to the overheads?
I think you could do it. Just use one snare mic, one kick mic, and play around with the various overhead and room mic options in each SDX.
Many libraries have one mono ambient mic nearer the kit for example.
You could end up using just 3 mics, or 5 mics. Who cares if it recreates the sound you are after.
You can adjust the timing (phase) of the overhead channels too, to align them on the snare…

I’m pretty sure you mean “Who cares *as long as* it recreates the sound you are after”
