…but so few DW snare drums.
Many many years ago, I bought DFH Superior and was very happy with it as I was able to set up a custom kit that I liked very much.
This kit had a particular kick and snare drum:
Kick: 22” DW (P.H. Rics Custom Maple shell)
Snare: 14” DW (Brass shell)
Those two pieces of gear were very distinctive and they were the essential core of my overall drum sound. The resonance/sustain of the snare was very unique.
Unfortunately, this piece of software isn’t up to the nowadays standards. The articulations aren’t that great anymore even though the sounds are stellar (in general, I like the raw samples of DFHS way better than those of the SD3 actually, the only thing that makes it unusable today are the articulations).
What I don’t understand is why ALL the DFHS’s pieces of gear weren’t upgraded/resampled since then.
For the life of me, I searched for an hour and a half in the website, looking at each and every expansion to date for this snare drum. It didn’t occur to me they could just not provide an upward support of the content of their own products (talking about the gear, not the app).
If they don’t support a product anymore, at least be consistent and resample its content as a new expansion!
All in all I found 3 DW snares in total among hundreds of snare drums. For whatever reason, DW kits are quite rare in their new product. So many snares and kicks sound are very similar or are just very subtle variations while other distinctive ones remains absent. I have many SDX expansions at this point and not a single snare sounds like that 14” DW brass shell.
I had some hope with the new “Kicks and snare” EZX but nope. Just some more black beauty’s to throw at us (I know, I’m exaggerating but barely ;-).
Anyway…
Consistency is the key. Otherwise, they get people like me, who like their products but are very frustrated about them at the same time.
All it would take is about 15 pieces of gear to resample in order to close that gap and fix that missed opportunity.
Let’s hope the next SDX would answer my prayer (not holding my breath though).
Thanks for your reply.
I guess there is a difference between dFH and DFH superior.
The snare I’m talking about is not part of DFH EZX and of any recent expansion set for that matter. Many snares kits, hats and other stuff from it were never resampled. Some say The metal foundry expansion is more of the same but it isn’t neither.
So far I was still hoping they would catch up eventually but since the latest “Kicks ans snares” expansion, I have little to no hope.
Now, in order to be a little bit constructive 🙂
Here is the kick and snare that I like:
Unprocessed Kick: 22” DW (P.H. Rics Custom Maple shell) -> right foot then left foot

Unprocessed Snare: 14” DW (Brass shell) -> right hand then left hand

Processed Snare: 14” DW (Brass shell) -> right hand then left hand with heavy compression and envelope shaping.

For the life of me, no modern kit produced by Toontrack that I know of or own allow me to get anywhere near this sound (it’s more than a hit, it’s also a distinct tone).
If anyone knows a kit produced to date that would mimic this snare closely enough and work with SD3, I would be very happy.
Take care guys.
