Questions from a noob (guitarplayer)

Ok, being totally unfamiliar with this whole facet of drumming software here’s what I want to do. I want to be able to program metal style drumbeats (I am thinking drumkit from hell) on a computer, run it through and amplifier and jam along with it. I don’t care about recording my guitar, I want my guitar sound to come from my own amplifier. Is this possible? Is this difficult?

There are about a million ways of doing this, but surely this is so simple, why can’t you just plug your guitar into your guitar amp and let the drums come out of the computer/reference/whatever speakers?
