I think the track is great, i’m not i’m an expert but personally the guitars could do with being a tad louder, maybe these levels would suit for a vocal track over them but for me the drums were pretty cool on my system here but the guitars need to brought up in line with the rest of the mix.

    Just my 2pennies heheh

Thx for feedback, i appreciate that) I used to mix guitars with idea of vocals, so i didn’t try to make them loud. But i think if i make kick and snare less louder, guitars will cut through the mix better. In my opinion kick is too big) I’ll work that direction)

Do you mix with a sub woofer in your system?

Regardless you can setup side-chaining to ensure the guitars are loud and then dip on a slow release when the vocals come in? Just a random idea, cos at the end of our guitars buss we tend to have a group track with overall mild compression just to keep the transients/overlaps in check and adding the sidechain is pretty much automatic so it’s doing 2 jobs at once but effortless to setup.

    To VOLiTiAN:
Nope, i didnt use a sub woofer cause i have no this unit at home) And this is bad cause my monitoring system do not give me whole frequency picture and thats why i have to rely upon spectral analysis plugins)
I have a problems with side chaining) Its sad but i don’t now how it works) is it like i put a compressor with side chain function on guitars group track and then i activate it on kick for example or vocals?) I will appreciate if you give me some advice about how it works and what brand of compressor with side chain can i use )))

Coryd and WaterBoy : Thanx guys, i hope to make finally songs from this test samples)

Well a sub certainly helped me iron out some creases on the low-end it just gives a better feel for a tone rather than just EQ’ing for commercial purposes.

What host are you recording into?

There are various ways to sidechain, but normally you are quite right there is a compressor (with sidechain enabled) on the track you want to be ducked or dipped in volume. You then have a trigger track (normally the kick or vocals) which would need to be bussed to the side-chains input.

Aside from that look up dbaudioware they do sidechain plugins and there’s a tutorial on how to side chain using the waves compressors (however I always found waves to colour the sound in a horrible way and be a bit complex to work with)

    You quite right!

I am using Nuendo 4 with ESI Juli@ soundcard

A-ha, so when there are no vocals or kick, guitars stay non compressed with side chain compressor? And it works when the kick goes? So as i understand it makes kick cut through guitars better)

Cool!) I think that some Waves plugins kill thickness of signal.

    Thx David )

Exactly, instead of a standard compressor which is just looking at the input signal to compress it’s also set to “listen” from whatever channel is bussed to it, so keeps the levels in check then when it’s trigger comes through then it ducks aswell 🙂

Does cubase 4 have their own internal compressor with sidechain? With Cubase 5 they have these plugins already

It’s really simple basically setup the compressor on the guitars, enable the sidechain, then go to the track you want to use as the trigger i.e. kick and open up the channel, go to the sends list on the right hand side, and you should see an option in the drop down menu for side-chains and it should list the name of the track they are on, after than you will have to alter the fader to send more or less signal to the guitars depending on the depth of the compression, if you can’t hear any ducking it’s probably that the comp threshold is too high or the send is too low.

Aside from that if you don’t have the pre-made internal route, dbaudioware works nice, you just insert it on each of the tracks you want to include and set one to “listen” the other to “send” and it pretty much routes it through it’s own dll’s rather than cubase’s routing.

    hope that helps! 🙂

You and I are going to have to compare notes with our new batch of mixes 🙂

Oh, thats really good) It will help me a lot. I didnt ever use this function.

Nuendo 4 is similar to Cubase 5. I saw internal compressor there, but i always fear to use steinberg plugins))))

Super, thank you man) Its all there i can see it) Now finally i understand the algorithm. Thats voodoo magic))))))
I have to fing that dbaudioware, its very simple to use.

Of course, David. Id like to) Ill try to make some improvements next week) THX THX THX!

    Cheers, buddy)
