When I look at a midi pack and see, for example, an audio demo labeled Americana EZX, does that indicate I already have that midi data if I own the American EZX expansion pack?
Hi,
that indicates only that the Americana EZX sounds were used when playing back that MIDI.
The MIDI packs that are sold both separately and included in EZX:s are clearly labeled so on their product page.

The audio demonstrates how the MIDI groove will sound when played by the aforementioned EZX expansion sound library.
Any MIDI expansion packs that were also included in an EZX expansion sound library are clearly marked as such to avoid duplication.
edit: John beat me to the punch.
I’m still confused. Let me give a specific example. If I own the Jazz EZX expansion, do I already own all the midi data in the Jazz midi pack?
No,
since that MIDI pack is not labeled as I described above.
Let me point you to an example where it is the same MIDI as included in an EZX: the Americana MIDI.
Please see my attached screen shot.

John
