Hello and welcome to the forum.

If you are just starting out you might want to start out with MIDI groove clips. They can be used as is or can be edited In a DAW (digital audio workstation) or with programs like EZ Player Pro (see tutorials on the main page).
Toontrack offers MIDI grooves as well as 3rd parties such as http://www.groovemonkee.com/en/  and http://www.oddgrooves.com/.

As to MIDI controllers…you have to decide on what your needs are, budget, and so forth. There are dedicated drum MIDI controllers that vary in price as well as features.

Here are some controllers and guides you can check out:

Getting a midi keyboard for me mattered if doing drums was all I needed it for. If your just going to be doing drums / drum beats, I’d grab something like the Oxygen 25. I have yet to see a guy or gal program each piece of a kit at once on a 88 key midi controller. NOT SAYING IT CAN’T BE DONE!!! Just saying I aint seen it yet. I have a ReMote 25 and whenever I need it, it’s perfect for drums. I usually pencil everything in. Hehehe… I guess that’s kinda old skool now with all these grooves available.
If you plan on adding big sample libraries like Omnisphere and orchestral libraries, a bigger midi keyboard controller may be better!

So, for Metal beats …. save some $$$ and get a 25. Or save ALL your $$$ and pencil em’ in!!!

    Good Luck
