Buy Custom & Vintage, or get someone to send you the midi.

IMO, Gadd isn’t the simplest of players either.

you can edit the fills if theyre too busy for you. if the busy part of the fill uses, say, 16th notes, try grabbing the busy part and quantizing it to 8th notes. or just edit it the regular way..not to be obvious but music’s an art, why would you want it to be stock?

I own them both and the fills aren’t cutting it.

yes, but his fills are logical and in-the-pocket

I agree with you, editing fills is 1) a pain, and 2) not so great if you are trying to audition suitable fills in their unedited form.
Did you say the fills in C&V were ‘not cutting it’?

OK, everybody–chill. The signal-to-noise ratio is usually quite good around here, so let’s just take a step back, cool?

Hi, Willy. Welcome to the forum! I think you’ll find this is a very good place to hang out and ask questions, even if this thread hasn’t gone the way you wanted so far.

Personally, I’m just a little confused as to which products you currently own. Obviously you own SD2 and EZD. Do you also own Custom & Vintage? Do you own any other expansions?

Generally speaking, I’m very sympathetic to what you’re saying here. I tend to think a lot of drum packs cater to folks who want drums to be fairly busy and to be the focus of a mix. I’m not one of those people. I have found some really good, simple fills scattered about in the stock MIDI files played by Nir Z (the Avatar kit and MIDI). Some of them are a lot busier than I ever want personally, but some of them are really good and straightforward. Likewise with Nir Z’s work on Allaire/Hit Factory. I also think Chris played some great fills in the C&V pack. I haven’t yet picked up the new Songwriter’s Fills Pack, but I do have the Songwriter’s MIDI Pack, and I think those grooves are really well done, so I would have high hopes for the fills pack, as well. They’re played by the same drummer.

I haven’t been as happy with the grooves I’ve picked up from Groove Monkee, personally. But maybe that’s just me.

All in all, there are some good, simple, straightforward, non-showy fills in there–you just have to hunt for them a bit.

IMO …., I think MOST of the entire Midi packs by toonrack are too complicated ( I have them all )

…, I find about 80% of them unusable to me without major-major super time consuming editing – so much in fact that I am often just manually writing many beats . What P%sses me off is I like the human playing the drums feel of the toontrack midi packs …, but by the time I massively cut snippets up ( to narrow down something simplified enough to my liking) …, and then copy and paste bits here and there to make the drum track – all my joined snippets lose that free flowing human played sound that the longer /original midi clips had.

and the fills , OMG …, mostly anything over about number 3 on the list is just too much IMO …., I did buy EZdrummer2 for the less drums more drums feature and the search function which helps , but GOD I WISH those beats were much simpler to begin with.

I find platinum samples to be lightyears above toontracks offerings when it comes to variety of usable beats …, but whats annoying is 3rd party packs dont appear to come up in the tap to search for beat function of EZD2

I am a songwriter who writes songs, that have their own ; swing, feel, changes, mood etc …, and subtleties with slight variations in the beats drumming is what make the songs I write shine – not over the top drum fills that say …., ” f%ck what the song is doing – look at me everyone dont you think i’m the hottest drummer you have ever seen” ……., which unless you spend a gazillion hours editing, while at the same time disregarding most of the toontrack material is all I seem to get :(
