Hi!
I am quite new to the whole Superior2 and recording/mixing stuff so please excuse my not-yet-very-thorough-knowledge. Anyhow we have been recording drums (real drums) in a professional studio using SSL/ProTools combination and obviously the drum sounds great. The only problem is that the drummer had a bit of a problem with his double kick so basically we have ended up “copy/pasting” kicks … hey it’s speed metal so the double kick is a must! 🙂
Now the idea is that we create kick-only MIDI track (we use Drum Tracker for this) and then use Superior 2 and ProTools to re-create the kick (and adjust/tweak some kicks in between, of course) only. So we have the MIDI tracks of the kick and I was just wondering if there are any “best-of” tips that you gurus can contribute. For example how to re-create the realistic sound and feel of the kick … for example when there’s a double-kick line in progress I usually set the MIDI velocity of the first kick to 92 and of the second one to 104 and stuff like that – because I don’t want that in the end the kick will sound like a constant drum machine. What is the recommended MIDI velocity range that you use? And what span do you use – is it like for example from 90-94 or from 90-120? I did read on the forum that it is not the best option to use velocities above 120 so I did limit mine to this value. However I still think that the kick sound is “too metallic”. I use Sonor SQ2 18×22″ kick (from Metal Foundry) with The Facer (from Studio-something default presets)…
I mean in general I just wanted to know what rules do you follow when creating (or trying to) real-human-feel drums with Superior 2 using MIDIs.
Many thanks for any inputs.
Regards!
i would figure out the exact bpm of the drum part, find as close as posible, a loop inside the drum loops of SD and have alook at the velocities in there. maybe even copy and paste em into your drum part and organise em there.
you can at the very least see the veloctiy increments of the SD loop and just change them in “your” drum map.
A lot of the grooves I have looked at have the velocities on the kick set quite high. Many of them set at 127. With the humanize features on, I think it sounds pretty natural.
