[This first posting for this thread will be perpetually edited and added to as requests to improve and enhance the grid editor come in].
A lot of us who create drum tracks are not drummers in any sense of the word. And the reason I got out of programming drums entirely is that after hearing some ridiculously insane and yet natural real drummers, I realized that while technically possible to get the work done, the versatility of the midi editor grid in any DAW and even with the new S3 grid editor is just not welcoming or intuitive enough for a person to be inclined to try to replicate and write in something similar to the humanized inhumanity of a very intense drummer. The grids are not intuitively functional or versatile for a rapid constant workflow with the need for rapidly changing selection on the fly with quick commands and modifiers.
Therefore the following is a request list for the grid editor for features that would contribute to an overall more intuitive versatility, visual features, and on-the fly switching of selections and options to make the experience of writing in drums be as rapid and as natural as possible:
1) be able to change the order of the drums from top to bottom and therefor be able to place whichever kit pieces on the bottom and then selecting the next to go on top on the grid, (to match the fact that kick is down low then snare and then perhaps placing toms on top of that and then cymbals at the very top or whatever other order a person wishes)
1-b). The actual hits to be circles or even ovals as the default shape and to have the other shapes like diamonds, squares, triangles, or pentagons (possibly depending on hit type or just other rows)
1-c) key modifiers to the click to activate a particular hit type for that line instead of opening the menu which is not as workflow-friendly.
1-d) sizing or color fading of the actual hits perhaps to represent velocity – full size for full 127 velocity, and getting smaller for lower velocities (or the faded color option (user selectable)
2) most importantly for me: color coded per row piece and perhaps per row’s hit for lower intensity color per that kit piece for the other hit types (unless shape type was selected as alternate hit type)
(sometimes guessing tor attempting to remember whats on some particular line is not so automatic unless you can cross-align what color piece is on that row)
3) if people want to use the opened branch the way it is now – or for that hierarchy for sub-variations per drum to also be possible to open upwards if the person prefers hit types to go upwards from the bottom to the top) .
4) a key modifier to humanize on the go
5) key modifier to randomize velocity on the go
6) Need a kind of intelligent and instant system fully accessible on the grid that is very easy and with key shortcuts to edit fast and make the manual type-in process more natural, and with a randoms slight offset right of the batt for humanization of timing so that it doesnt have to be done after.
7) subdivisions to triplets to be instantly accessible with the key commands
8). Key combination command for write in multiple hits on grid
Anyone is free to add more requests to this list.

Thanked by: Jason GittensAnyone at all?
This midi grid editor is not versatile enough. Sorry but not even close. It badly calls for these features. The shaopes and colors and all the other stuff and even things which I prolly have not thought of. Needs serious customization and shaping to a user’s way of working. It should be automatically built-in to have all these features because drums are very hard to get natural when you are trying to create high level stuff that is insanely intense. Its very hard to edit to be instantly proper at that level and so why not create a visual environment of penciling things in that makes it a lot easier in terms of easing the work that eyes have to do. These things will help with allowing the eyes have a more automatic response and less fatigue, as well as many modifier combos and key combos will allow for exponentially more scalable work. This is such a no-brainer and I am surprised this hasnt been requested yet.
