What determines the sensitivity of the ekit: the trigger or the brain?

Question #2: all of the ekits that I see have rack toms (no toms mounted on the kick), Is that by chance or by design? I was thinking about buying a cheap kit and converting it. Do I need to put the toms on a rack?

1. both. the exact trigger design and where the piezo sits certainly has a huge impact on sensitivity. If the data is processed poorly in the module then you won’t get much out of an otherwise decent pad.
2. yes, to avoid cross triggering. With all toms fixed to a rack you may already have issues with vibrations of one triggering the neighbours so imagine the results with the kick and tom physically attached.
YMMV however.

A mounting like this may be an alternative to a rack
