A MIDI device definitely is a good way to create your own grooves. If you are a keyboard player then a music keyboard will work OK. I use a Nektar LX88; http://www.nektartech.com/products.html, which also has pads for developing patterns. If you only want something to tap out rhythm, something like from the Akai MPD line might work; http://www.akaipro.com/products/pad-controllers

Today, I bought from Amazon the:

Akai Professional MPK Mini MKII | 25-Key Ultra-Portable USB MIDI Drum Pad & Keyboard Controller with Joystick, VIP Software Download Included

If I buy Toontrack EZ Drummer 2, will there be a tutorial on how to setup and use with Ableton 9.1 and the MPK MIni MKII? Or am I on my own to figure it out?

Once you have EZDrummer 2 authorized you will have access to the technical support forum for EZDrummer 2 and DAWs. There are a lot of Ableton users there so it’s a good place to start asking. Read the manual for Ableton first. Learn about VIs (virtual instruments) and how they work in Ableton. I don’t use Ableton (Pro Tools and Studio One are my DAWs), so I won’t be much help there. I did find this Youtube video for Ableton Live and the MPK Mini MKII, so it may get you started or at least in the ball park. The process for using EZD2 should be fairly similar to Wobble or Hybrid that are mentioned in the video and I think are bundled with the MPK Mini MKII.

Also if you could update your profile signature with your system information that will help people help you out, particularly when it comes to Mac/Windows, which have slightly different installation procedures.
