I became aware of this old folk song from Kris Kristofferson in the version from Johnny Cash. And I love the lyrics and the vocal melody line a lot.
Actually I wanted to cover this song pretty close to the original with a longer guitar part in between. But this didn’t feel right to me. Nothing I really could add to the original.
So I started to experiment for a while with different grooves. Finally I arranged this cover version with a Rock Vibe at 120 bpm (The Marshall-Version). Consequently the guitar picking is no longer made by Johnny, but more likely from Eddie
I recorded the guitar tracks with my Warmoth H-S-H built (mahogany body), a James Tyler Variax JTV69 and a Marshall JVM410 head (see info section of the video for more details to the recording equipment).
The drums are programmed with EZ Drummer 2. Very nice package for me as a songwriter.
Hardcore Kris Kristofferson / Johnny Cash fans will probably kill me for that cover, but I think the Rock vibe gives this originally very sad song an optimistic touch, which feels good to me.
