I use a standalone recorder (Tascam 2488 neo) Want to get EZ drummer and install on my laptop. Would i be able to take a drum track from the software and transfer them into my tascam. I have windows 7 on my laptop. I suspect i will need recording software on my laptop. Am i gonna be able to do this and what recording software would be best with this application?
Hi, I am also new and have that same Q. I have a Vf-160 and would like to know how I could bounce my drum tracks off my PC to it. I have ez-drummer and I want/need to buy some software. Am I gonna loose a little sound from doing this?? Any thoughts??? Thx
You would use your laptop as a sample playback machine.
You’d have to record the drum sounds to your standalone recorder, probably by using audio out on the PC to audio in on the recorder, then the recordings would act the same as a recording of acoustic drums.
You’re missing out on many benefits of EZdrummer though.
The ability to completely change/edit song arrangement, drum parts and drum sounds right up to the final mix of your project.
Recording to a separate tape machine means you have to decide on the drum parts and drum sounds fairly early on, then you’re stuck with that decision.
Hello – I also use a Tascam 2488 NEO workstation and I use superior Drummer and EzDrummer for my drum recordings. Best way to utilize this, is to have some kind of USB or Firewire interface as your audio transfer. Make sure it has an SPDIF out connection on it. Then, run a GOOD quality SPDIF cable from the interface to the Tascam Digital IN connector. This keeps the audio quality going at the same rate and you don’t lose anything in the process. In other words, Digital to Digital, if you know what I mean.
Now, you can get your drum tracks setup in your DAW, whatever it is, on your computer. Create your tracks like normal in your DAW. Then after you have your tracks laid out and ready to be used, you can either record individual drums to individual tracks on the Tascam, or the whole drum set into the Tascam on say, 2 tracks. Know this- recording individual drums onto individual tracks in the Tascam gives you more control over each drum. So, you would end up using about 10 to 12 Tascam tracks to complete the whole set.
But you can add EQ, Reverb, etc, to each drum and control the volume levels of each drum! Cool huh? I usually get my drums EQ’d, Reverbed, and fixed how I want it BEFORE i start recording them to the NEO. But, either way, you have more control over them. Remember, SPDIF is the KEY. Don’t try to use the ABCDEFGH inputs on the NEO for this. You end up losing quality of audio because those inputs are ANALOG and have to go through converters before they become tracks. SPDIF to SPDIF is the best way. I use Firewire as my Interface and it has great SPDIF ins and outs. USB will work also. By the way, if you need to record individual drums into the NEO, separate them in the DAW first when it asks you to use separate tracks for each drum when you open Superior or EZDrummer. Makes it so much easier to record each one in the NEO. Thanks guys 🙂
Guitarists are well Strung!
