Hi,
On my Roland TD-3, when I play Hi-Hats, Rides and Snares, I find it difficult to have the appropriate expected response like with a real kit. Velocities are often all over the place when I record. It seems that it is hard have the expected sound come out and played in a controlled way.
To correct this, I use the velocity controls on the mapping page in order to limit the Hi and Low velocities. But then, it’s like if everything is very flatten and lacks expression.
Would someone know why? Would better e-Drums have better response? Is this a common issue?
Thanks for your help

it sounds like your pads need calibrating, or possibly that you are hitting the piezos dead on, are your mesh head pretty loose? try to tighten the screws all around a little, even if the pad no longer bounce to taste…

Does Toontrack recommend a particular e-drum with S2.0?
Do they use a particular e-drum kit to record the midi loops and test their product?
Do users generally agree on a kit working particularly well with S2.0?
I heard about the Hart Pro 6.4 + the TD-20 as a good combination for S2.0. Is this true?
Would it be possible to recommend the best kits for S2.0, but also recommend some for low budgets?
Thanks

I’m also wondering, which modules would be best for S2.0?
I wrote to Roland. They tell me that among their products, the TD-20 and TD-12 modules would have the best quality for accuracy, reliability and fast response triggering. Next category would be the Td-9 and TD-4 because they have their latest technology. The former generations would not be as good. If I understand correctly, since I’m only using the module to trigger S2.0, it would make sense to save money and avoid buying the TD-20 or TD-9.
Are there any other modules out there that would be competitive to the td-12 or td-4 modules? It’s unfortunate we have to pay for all the sounds and stuff we don’t need.

Have a look for a used TD8.
Works great with SD2, and it sounds good on it’s own
Of course I’m biased
Windows 10 |3.4 I7 Ivy Bridge 16gb ddr3 | Studio One Producer | Focusrite Forte USB2 | Roland TD11 | EZDrummer 2 | EZmix 2 | EZkeys 2 | StudioOne Pro 4| Cubase 10 Pro
I have a TD-3 but I only use it to trigger S2.0. I never use the TD-3 sounds.
Compressed sounds on a chip rom don’t have the potential of sounding as good as a sample library with a lot of ram.
Roland also wrote to me saying their best triggering system was in the TD-12/20 modules. Second best quality in the TD-4/9 and then the former generation. So I’m not sure where does the TD-8 figure in this; Maybe in the former generation. I would probably purchase a TD-4 before.
Thanks for your help.

Does Toontrack recommend a particular e-drum with S2.0?
no – we are vendor independent and, while it may not necessarily be true, you usually get what you pay for so yes, latest technology + higher price tag usually means more appropriate.
Certain foot controllers, old or new, at the low end of the budget in particular are renown to be little more than bits of metal without soul and a fair way short of amazing. Typically, inexpensive modules used in combination with well built triggers and foot controllers are a big step up when compared to the -off-the-shelf’ offering in that price bracket.
Do they use a particular e-drum kit to record the midi loops and test their product?
I personally have used a DrumKat, TD-3, TD8, TD-12 and TD-20, Trigger I/O and DTXplorer to test, review and assess our products, and for live critical scenarios. For MIDI, we regularly use, but not only, a TD-20 with the 3rd party triggers that offer the best experience for a particular performer without compromising the recording quality.
Otherwise our testers are chosen specifically to make our hardware tests as unrestrictive as possible. Not all have the latest and greatest, and not all necessarily know how to get the best out of their module. In other words it is as meaningfully representative as our customer base as possible.
Do users generally agree on a kit working particularly well with S2.0?
so no. It depends on budget, your preference of trigger response (not as in timing but feel), and a lot of other factors. The hardware best to avoid is rare, which is the important thing to remember from this post.
I heard about the Hart Pro 6.4 + the TD-20 as a good combination for S2.0. Is this true?
yes, but many other combinations from cherry picked components could go head to head with this.
Would it be possible to recommend the best kits for S2.0, but also recommend some for low budgets?
as per above, no. Not in an official manner and not in an authoritative way. If you post your budget I’m sure you will get some opinions and suggestions from other users.
I’m also wondering, which modules would be best for S2.0?
isn’t this another way to ask the same question once more? 😉
