I’m using DKH in EZdrummer and I like the sound I’m getting with the drums tracks alone. The problem is that the drum track can’t cut through the mix of other instruments. Maybe it’s just my ear but even when I bring up the volume of the drum track to near clipping it still sounds much lower than the other instruments, which, according to the meters, are quite low. This seems to be true when the other instruments are distorted guitar, synths, or samples. What can I tweak to get my drums to stand out in the mix? Is EQ the answer? Can anyone recommend a good source for info on how to EQ drums?
Looking for some tips on EQ could be useful, but also just looking for general tips on mixing would be where I would start.
Although there are different techniques, many people would start by getting a balance with the drums and then raising the faders on the other instruments relative to the drums. From your description it sounds like you may be trying to do the reverse. Try it out for yourself and see if it helps. DFH is pre-processed to be mix-ready, so it shouldn’t require a huge amount of extra processing. This really sounds like more of a balance issue to me.
If you use Google you will find a huge amount of info on mixing including equing.
