Variable Switch for Hi-Hats on the TD-10
by Michael Beatnik
This Unit Gives You Total Control Over You’re Hi-Hats From Fully Open, Partialy Closed, and Completely Closed, Anywhere You Like, Just Like Actual Hats! Pedal Is Still Functional Unless Unit is Set to Fully Closed.
Parts Needed All Availiable From Radio Shack:
1- potentiometer 50k ohms part #271-1716
2- 1/4″ phone jacks part #274-252
1- project enclosure 2x3x1″ part #270-1801
1- hexagonal control knob part #274-407
Total Cost About Seven Bucks
First you will need to cut the shaft of the potentiometer to about 1/2″. Next, using an ohm meter set to ohms find the two tabs that the meters needle moves while turning the potentiometer shaft.
As you can see I used the center and left tabs. Solder two wires to each of these two tabs. Then solderone wire from each tab to the phone jacks.
Drill a hole for the two jacks in each end of the project box and one in the lid for the potentiometer.
Now install the assembly into the box as shown (this may take some work it’s a tight fit).
Install the lid, potentiometer nut, and knob and you’re ready to go. Just plug this unit in between the module and hi-hat pedal, adjust for you’re prefered seting and play!
You can easily make this unit footswitchable. Solder the two 1/4″ jacks together tip tab to tip tab and sleeve tab to sleeve tab. Next solder a wire to each tab of one of the jacks soldering one of these to the potentiometer the other to a pushbutton on/off switch. Next solder a wire between the potentiometer and the other switch tab. All thats left is to mount this in a box and it’s ready for action. Now you can have the normal hat or the sound you have dialed in at the push of the switch. You might have to look for a decent switch Radio Shack doesn’t have any that look like they would hold up to a foot…
Thanx Michael for this design!
Best.

Thank you for the great info posted here. I made a variable switch with a 50k ohm pot as above and it works good. I Have a Roland TD-10 EXP and the HH Pedal is an FD-7. To say the least the pedal does not allow much control of the sound. i.e just a little foot movement is all that is needed to go from full closed to full open. Above you say to use a 50k ohm pot but I have read that the FD-7 is about 25K ohm. On the box I made with the 50k ohm pot just a small twist and you have changed the sound allot. Is there any way to make the pot less sensitive to allow more control of the sound? Say like putting in a 25k ohm pot. Also is the FD-8 a better pedal? I play double base and it nice to have control over the hi hat sound but I would like the box’s pot sensitivity spread out a bit more throughout the turn of the potentiometer. Is that possible maybe using a 10 turn potentiometer instead of this standard type?
