Suspended Trigger
by FunkApotimus
Hey everyone!
I just came up with a new design for improving isolation to eliminate false triggering, so I thought I’d share it 🙂
I got the idea from a shock mount for a condenser microphone.
Its basically the same as all the other mesh head designs out there, except the piezo/foam (or cone if you prefer) is suspended but a piece of elastic streached between a square block of wood (which the piezo is mounted onto) and the shell of the drum.
The shell has 2 small holes about 1cm apart drilled about 2cm down from the rim between each lug. My drum has 6 lugs, therefore 12 small holes drilled in it. The block of wood has 6 small holes drilled in it, one in each corner and one in the middle on each side.
A single piece of elastic (quite long) is then thredded through all the holes and tied together at the end.
It takes some time to get the block of wood centered, but you just need to make sure the elastic is distributed evenly. You can then mount your piezo and wedge of foam (or cone).
I then added a crossmember below the block of wood, and attached a foam block to this which makes contact with the block of wood to stop it from bouncing (which causes double triggering).
Here are some pictures :
This is by far the best design I have ever used. Even the softest hits on the outside of the head trigger, yet i can wack the rim as hard as a can and not trigger the head piezo at all 🙂
Thanx FunkApotimus for your contribution!
Best.Â
