Ballistik Trigger
by Michael Beatnik
Here I am using a Radio Shack piezo #273-073,
Shack two-conductor 1/4″ phone jack #274-340,
and the bottom of a can Koozie for the foam
contact.
First I shelled the piezo of its plastic housing. Next is
to punch out foam circles fron the Koozie base the
same size as the piezos’ diameter and about half that
diameter for the head contact piece (you can do
them both the same size if you prefer).
To punch them I used a piece of pipe somewhat
sharpened and punched them out with a good
whack from a hammer (be careful and use eye
protection please).
Adhere the foam pieces together using general
purpose two sided carpet tape (not the cloth or
fiber type, just the adhesive type). Use the same
tape to adhere the foam to the piezo.
Next simply solder the piezo to the cable and 1/4″
jack. I also used heat shrink tubing to cover the
solder joints. On the Shack jack the small tab is the
tip and the larger tab is the sleeve. These jacks can
be troublesome to solder, always pre-tin the cable
leads and the jacks tabs before connecting. This
way it doesnt take as much heat to actually connect
them.
Last you will need to cut a piece of double sided
foam tap the same diameter as the piezo. Use this
on the base of the piezo to adhere it to your
crossmember standoff.
Thanx Michael for this great idea!
Best.
