also would be nice if possible, to have Crash Cymbals in a individual mixer track, different from OH Dyn
Hi,
which product are we talking about? I can only see an EZdrummer 2 demo registered to your account.
In Superior Drummer 3, you can create a separate mixer channel for a Cymbal. With the help of Envelopes and EQ, you can damp drums.

yeap.. but I guess he si talking about.. like BFD3… Damping effect… in BFD3 from Fxpansion it sounds really good that effect..
and it is very different from changing the envelope.

Please elaborate; how can it be very different from what I suggest?
Damping the drums is about controlling the decay and overtones of a drum, right? Optimally you do it directly when sampling by using Moongel, rings, tape, etc. but if you have to simulate it after the fact, using the instrument’s Envelope to change the Decay, Sustain, Hold and Release and then add Filter/EQ in mixer on the channels in question and perhaps play with the Level Envelope Releases for e.g. the AMB channel in the mixer as well, should get you somewhere near.

Hi, John, this is very helpful information. Can you please tell a little more about the last part of your quote regarding Filter/EQ and Ambient channels. Especially working with ambience for more dampened, vintage sound. Thank you.
Hi Ivan,
I don’t think there’s one setting that applies to all drums and situations but in general, I’d try rolling off a bit with a Low-pass filter with a gentle slope.
If you have applied an Envelope to your drums, you can experiment with the ‘Level Envelope Releases’ in the OH/AMB channels in the mixer.
Personally, I’d keep any AMB mics pretty low in volume but you can also try soloing the AMB channel(s) and insert an EQ and try to find the frequencies that ‘boost’ the room and make it sound larger. When you have, invert the boost to a cut instead.

There is a bug in ‘Level Envelope Releases’ for S3.0.3, and earlier, making it not affect the Curve Slope of the envelope. I found that out thanks to this thread back in November, 3 months ago. After I read the first post here I tried to damp some drums in SD3 for the first time and found out that the results were far from what I expected. Once I fixed that bug the problems went away.
The method I used was pretty much what John is hinting at:
1. Solo the close mic/s of the drum and put in an EQ that reduces its longest ringing frequencies.
2. Put the drum in question on its own new AMB mic. (Route Instrument Microphones)
3. Move that EQ to this new AMB mic.
4. Enable the ‘Envelop and Offset’ for the drum and dial in a Release value below 2s.
5. Adjust the ‘Curve Slope’ until the drum is as damped as you want it.
6. Go back to the new AMB mic and extend the ‘Level Envelope Releases’ until the room is wet enough.
That last step doesn’t work until you get an updated SD3 with that bugfix.
