Cymbal issues with V Drums

Hello.

Superior 2.0 newbie here.

Well, I spent a couple of hours fine-tuning my VDrum kit as best I could, having purchased lots of the higher-end pads and cymbals to go with it, and ended up with lots of great and useful articulations, with each cymbal having at least 2 sounds mapped to it.

Then I switched over to Superior (which is my intent, to use the Roland kit to trigger the Superior’s nice drum samples) and am dismayed to be unable to get the cymbals to do more than one thing! Well, crash or mute, but where are edge, bow, bell? Seriously, has this rendered my multi-zone pads into single-purpose one-trick ponies?!

Maybe I just don’t understand what I’m doing, and I have been searching for hours among all known help forums and topics and videos. How can you have the drums be so expressive and the cymbals so one-dimensional? That makes no sense, so I’m hopeful I just have it set up wrong.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated, I’m really frustrated right now and can’t see using Superior with that limitation any more than I will be using the TD12’s internal sounds to record. Do I have to go with acoustic drums in the end after all? Or at least acoustic cymbals? That’s what I was trying to avoid!

The crash and china Cymbals have 2 mapped sounds only, that’s right. All ride cymbal into superior drummer can do more than two sounds like tip, edge, bell etc.

The most crash cymbal that I know only have one trigger (sometimes with choke). The ride cymbals could have one, two or three zoone triggers with/without choke.

In NY-Avatar (standard in Superior Drummer 2) there are only three sounds for the ride cymbal: Ride, Bell and Edge.

How to manage: Choose the page ‘Mapping Window’ into Superior DR and then do a right click on that cymbal you want to edit (see manual page 18 and 26). On the right top corner of the superior box you can right click on the sound (Ride, Bell or Edge) and immediatly you will see the keys in at the bottom keyboard colored orange. Now you can choose that midi note into your hardware or better click the ‘learn Button’ in the top right corner and hit your drum for to change.

It is possible to pull an cymbal sound with your mouse on a special key, too.

If this will not be enough for you, than you can create your own midi nodes (see manual page 30). That means different sounds with one trigger depending on your hit velocity only!

I have been working on assembling the best edrumming kit posible for a while now. I visited here while reseraching equipment and decided to reply.
Im using a TD-20, Roland cymbals and Hart pads, except for the kick is roalnd.

To get the most out of the drum kit I’m currenty doing the following: Using sounds only from the TD-20, tweeking a few good sounds and trigger setting and messing with what controls are sent out and what can only be used by the TD-20 sound engine.

The Cymbals are the main thing here. there is no standard communication protocall for the 3 sounds w/ position to mix a sound together. The high hat and snare get all there trimming too in the computer. Also, Im using aux 1,2, to be the rims of my snair and top tom. This way you can set the rim and head sounds to mix rather than cut each other off.

What I want to do is mix and match to gain the best stuff. I plan to use the software and hardware sounds together. To do this im about to purchase a RokBox with and alpha link and MX-4 MADI card. With this I gain a 64 channel 96K mixer with EQ, and Compression. 24 good audio ins.

With this system I can take the Audio from the TD-20, rout Cymbals to indevidual outs, and a stero balance of other kit pieces. then start eliminating TD-20 sound replaceing them with Software over time. This system is capable of recieving audio, playing samples, mixing them, and playgin back in about 1.5 ms. The delay time on my triggers are 2.3 ms and I would not notice much delay till about 3.5. With system, and carfull trigger purchases, and tweeking, I think the dream of a real time good feeling electronic drum set has arived.

Cant wait to check out Gen 16 hats, Trick pedal trigers, and the Aquarian head triggers.
