So,
I’ve got a TD-12 kit with a VH-11 hihat controller.
I’m not entirely pleased with the VH-11 since I hit pretty hard sometimes and the controller takes this as I’m closing the hihat.
This leads to some unnatural closing, of course.
Now, I’m looking into upgrading/sitching the VH-11 but I’m curious if anyone has succesfully set up a 3-way trigger with TD-12?
I’m thinking along the lines of just mounting a Cymbal (3-way) and use an FD-8 or FD-7.
The extra output from the Cymbal, I would jack into one of the extra inputs of the TD-12.
Thoughts?

John

Have you tried assigning one of your CY-12’s as a hihat?….I’ve tried and it works pretty well obviously you’re still using the VH-11’s control and the hihat would be out of position, but it gives a pretty good impression of what to expect if you were to change to separate cymbal and footpedal.
I haven’t tried it but I’m pretty sure you could mount a CY-12 on your hihat stand using a rotation stopper and the original mounting parts from your hihat stand. You could then use the VH-11’s control section. I’m unsure whether it would give you any more rigidity than the VH-11 hat though.
I’ve used both the FD-7 and FD-8 with a CY-5 and whilst they’re great I felt the VH-11 was a big step up – but I’m not a particularly hard hitter

To raise this issue again, I do think you’re on to something with the VH-11 performance…..I really like the feel of the VH-11 but there is a problem with harder hits causing the controller to close a little causing some unnatural closing and opening (maybe I’m hitting harder than I used to). I’ve again tried using a CY-12 R/C as the hihat cymbal whilst still using the VH-11 controller on the hihat stand and definitely get smoother performance.
I’ve been looking into this and am wondering if a hihat stand like the dw-9500 with ‘The Infinitely Adjustable Locking Spring Tension’ would help….I’m guessing a higher tension would stop the downward movement when you hit the cymbal…..It would be an expensive experiment if it didn’t make a difference though.

John,
I’ve built my own three zone hi-hat cymbal (normal function into one input, separate bell trigger into another). My cymbal incorporates a canabalized VH-11 mechanism and works just fine. If you look closely, you can see the VH-11 mechanism (cylinder) directly under my bottom hi-hat cymbal in this pic:
Even the hardest hits do not cause me to experience the result you are getting which leads me to suspect that your stand might just be allowing travel too easily. The stand I use is an Axis and the spring tension is sufficient that the top cymbal does not move downward with the spindle without some foot pressure (i.e. doesn’t move down unintentionally when struck).

Nice looking kit there Chris!….so does the axis hi hat stand have spring tension adjustment?

Yes, you can adjust the tension to six presets. I don’t have mine set as high as it could go.
