Hi everyone,
I am thinking of purchasing the ‘entry level’ 13″ macbook pro (2.4 GHz, 4 Gb) – just wondering if anyone is using it with Superior Drummer 2 and how they are finding it..
I know it’s above the minimum specs so should be fine, just wondering what people’s “real-world” experience with it is…
I would mostly be using the Evil Drums SDX, and I have no problem with having to work in 16-bit mode or bouncing the drum tracks as audio if necessary.
My DAW is Logic Pro 9, and I use Amplitube 3, Guitar Rig 4 and Pod Farm 2 (which I can freeze in Logic) but I always deliberately try to make my songs ‘minimal’ i.e. as few tracks as possible (this is a stylistic decision rather than to save processing power)
A typical song mite be:
1 x Superor drummer (multi-out)
5 x guitar tracks with amp sims (mostly Amplitube 3 which seems to be a real resource hog in my experience)
1 x bass track with amp sim
2 x cello tracks
3 x vocal tracks
various compressors/eqs etc, mostly stock logic plugs
Any user experiences on what I can expect performance-wise would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Jeremy.

That sounds a lot like my mobile setup except I have a 2009 MBP with Metal Foundry and AT2 and a couple of other softsynths like Alchemy and Sonik Synth2. Works fine mostly but can be a bit low on RAM with the larger kits, so there is usually some bouncing and freezing going on.

Hi Per,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I don’t mind bouncing and freezing stuff anyway – sometimes it’s nice having flexibility to change the drums in a mix or completely change an amp sim after a part has been recorded, but mostly I like to commit to a part early on anyway so it’s kind of a non-issue for me. In fact, if I don’t commit to the ‘final’ sound early on I just go round and round in circles – too many choices can really impact one’s workflow in my opinion.
Cheers,
Jeremy.
