The OS Compatibility for VST 3 toggle in EZbass

Projects using the EZbass VST 3 plug-in saved on Windows cannot be loaded on macOS and vice versa due to how the identifier for the VST 3 plug-in is reported by EZbass, and this bug can unfortunately not be fixed without ruining old projects on one platform. We have, however, introduced a toggle in the advanced settings that allows you to work around this issue in EZbass version 1.2.0 and onwards.

This workaround can cause other problems:

  • USING THIS WORKAROUND WILL TEMPORARILY RENDER THE EZBASS VST 3 PLUG-IN UNLOADABLE IN YOUR OLD PROJECTS SAVED ON YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL IT IS REVERTED.
  • ANY PROJECT WITH THE EZBASS VST 3 PLUG-IN YOU SAVE WHILE THIS WORKAROUND IS ACTIVE WILL NOT LOAD WHEN YOU REVERT THE WORKAROUND.

Unaffected hosts and plug-in formats
If you are trying to load a project with any of following hosts and/or plug-in formats, you shouldn’t use this workaround at all. Loading the EZbass plug-in should work and there is something else causing the issue if you can’t load the plug-in.

  • Cubase/Nuendo version 12.0.52 and above.
  • Waveform 11 and above. (older versions may work too)
  • The AAX (Pro Tools plug-in), VST 2 or Audio Unit plug-in.

Solution:

Insert a new EZbass plug-in in the project, then navigate to Settings > Advanced in the plug-in and select the ID option that matches the OS that the project was initially saved on.

Depending on the situation you are in, it is important that you select the correct option. Click the buttons below to reveal when the different options should be used.

Use Mac VST 3 ID
My friend saved a DAW project with EZbass in it on macOS. When I load the DAW project on Windows, the DAW reports that it cannot find EZbass, but I know that EZbass is installed on my PC. In this case, select “Use Mac VST 3 ID”.

Use Windows VST 3 ID
My friend saved a DAW project with EZbass in it on Windows. When I load the DAW project on Mac, the DAW reports that it cannot find EZbass, but I know that EZbass is installed on my Mac. In this case, select “Use Windows VST 3 ID”.

After making sure that the DAW knows that the plug-in ID has changed, you can load the project.

Updating the plug-in ID in your DAW

After selecting the correct ID, you may need to do more than just restart the DAW to update its plug-in database so that it knows that the plug-in ID changed. Select your host below for more information.

Ableton Live

Ableton doesn’t know that the plug-in ID has changed at this stage. Follow the steps below to force Ableton to rescan the new ID.

  1. Find the folder where the EZbass.vst3 file is installed on your computer and make a note of where it is.

    • macOS:
      (Your System Drive) > Library > Audio > VST3
    • Windows:
      C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

  2. Temporarily move the EZbass.vst3, for example to the desktop.
  3. Launch Ableton and open the Plug-in Settings.

    • macOS:
      Live > Settings > Plug-Ins
    • Windows:
      Options > Preferences > Plug-Ins

  4. Click the Rescan button.
  5. Move the EZbass.vst3 file back to the folder you made a note of in step 1.
  6. Click the Rescan button again.

Cubase

Please do not use the toggle if you are on Cubase version 12.0.52 or above. In that case, Cubase should be able to load the EZbass.vst3 even if the project was saved in Cubase on another OS.

Cubase doesn’t know that the plug-in ID has changed at this stage. Follow the steps below to force Cubase to rescan the new ID.

  3. Launch Cubase and open the VST Plug-in Manager (Studio > VST Plug-in Manager).
  4. Click the Rescan All button to the right of the Search text field.
  5. Move the EZbass.vst3 file back to the folder you made a note of in step 1.
  6. Click the Rescan All button again.

Digital Performer

Digital Performer doesn’t know that the plug-in ID has changed at this stage. Follow the steps below to force Digital Performer to rescan the new ID.

  1. Exit any running instance of Digital Performer.
  2. Find and delete the Digital Performer VST 3 plug-in cache file on your file system.

    • macOS:
The folder in which the plug-in cache file is located in is hidden. To get there:

      1. Go to the desktop so that Finder is showing its menu bar at the top of your screen.
      2. Click “Go” and then “Go to Folder:”
      3. Copy and paste the following path into the Go to Folder window and hit Enter.
        ~/Library/Preferences/com.motu.MotuAudioSystem/

Delete the “VST3 Info Cache v2” file in that folder.

    • Windows:
The easiest way to get to the plug-in cache file is to:

      1. Open File Explorer.
      2. Copy and paste the following path into the address bar at the top of the File Explorer window, then hit Enter.
        %AppData%\Local\MOTU\MOTU Audio System\

Delete the “VST3 Info Cache v2” file in that folder.

  3. Launch Digital Performer again and now it should rescan the VST 3 plug-in ID.

FL Studio

After selecting the correct plug-in ID option, restart FL Studio and you should be able to load EZbass in the project that was saved on the other platform.

REAPER

After selecting the correct plug-in ID option, restart REAPER and you should be able to load EZbass in the project that was saved on the other platform.

Reason

After selecting the correct plug-in ID option, restart Reason and you should be able to load EZbass in the project that was saved on the other platform.

Studio One

Studio One doesn’t know that the plug-in ID has changed at this stage. Follow the steps below to force Studio One to rescan the new ID.

  1. Open the Plug-In Manager in Studio One (View > Plug-In Manager).
  2. Find and select the EZbass VST 3 in the plug-in list.
  3. Click Remove Plug-In Settings and restart Studio One.

Waveform

In the versions we’ve tested, this workaround has not been needed to load the EZbass VST 3 plug-in even if it was saved on a different OS/platform. But just in case it is needed in your version:

  1. Open the Plugins settings in Waveform (Settings > Plugins).
  2. Find and right-click the EZbass VST 3 in the plug-in list.
  3. Click “Remove Plugin from list”.
  4. Rescan VST 3 plug-ins. (Scanning for Plugins… > Scan for new or updated VST3 plugins)

In case of emergency…

If you are having issues updating the plug-in ID in your DAW and the plug-in just won’t load anymore even in new projects, you can always open the standalone application and go back to the ID that was being used by default.
