Hi folks,
First a disclaimer: I’m quite a n00b when it comes to this subject!
So a year ago, due to circumstances I will not be boring you with, I replaced my acoustic drums with a td50k. For the past year, I’ve amused myself with getting to know the machine and doing some home recording using an old DAW I bought back in the day to record band practice (Cakewalk home studio 2004 XL). I use the sounds of the TD50 module and record them as sound instead of midi. I hook up the td50 via USB to the PC and it then “takes over” windows audio drivers, as if the TD50 is a dedicated multi-track soundcard.
What I currently do, is load up an mp3 into a track and hit record. The track will playback through the TD50 in my headphones and I’ll just play along with it and record the drums to it. For what I’m using it for, this works really well.
I’ld like to take it to the “next” level and get more into the world of midi. But when reading up on what I’ll need exactly, I quickly feel like a kid lost in the woods…
I’m guessing my current xp-era DAW won’t be compatible with the SP3 plugin?
Will the plugin work with “any” modern DAW that supports vst plugins? Considering that (for the foreseeable future at least) the DAW is taking a backseat, really. All I require it to do is play a track and record my drums in real time and some light mixing. So I don’t feel like spending a lot of money on that…
First off, can the SD3 standalone handle this?
If not and assuming I upgrade my DAW to a compatible one, is there anything else I need, to do what I am currently already doing? Would the TD50 still function as the “audio controller” (or whatever the correct term is) which feeds playback into my headphones, or would I require some other audio interface or what not?
I’m trying to paint a complete picture of what the setup would look like and how much it would cost me, aside from the cost of SD3, to get everything up and running nicely.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not asking for a full technical essay here off course. The most important is just the confirmation that a proper DAW is all I’ll require extra. That is, if the standalone app can’t handle my use case by itself… Which would be absolutely awesome, but I doubt it will be the case.
Thanks in advance
