I am a songwriter who’s songs are influenced by 60’s/70’s pop mostly. Beatles/Beach Boys……. also folk and indie jangle rock like Byrds, Neil Young and REM. Also some jazzy pop like Bacharach and Steely Dan and some R&B. I use pop shuffles a lot like the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Do You Believe In Magic” beat.
After searching through the midi pack samples and trying out the fills and the fills that come with the demo of EZdrummer I find the same thing that others agree with on forums like gearslutz etc.
Most of the toontrack midi drum patterns and fills are too bombastic and too busy. Its like toontrack is trying to blow you away and wow the listener with these aggressive overly played parts…including many fills.
I haven’t found the more simple straightforward tasteful fills that can be found in many 3rd party midi patterns.
Even though you can control the velocity on the toontrack midi it still seems like most patterns are played too aggressively.
I know you can tame some of the drums in the mixing. But I would rather start out with drum parts that are closer to what I need from the start.
I’d like to create drum tracks for these original songs that an acoustic/electric duo can perform live with. Don’t want over the top drum tracks..just simple tasteful beats and grooves and some nice simple fills without all the bombast. And do some basic recording on my DAW.
Do you have any suggestions without giving me hundreds of fills and patterns I’ll never use?
Would the songwriters edition be a good choice for my situation? I wasn’t crazy about some of the fills I sampled.
I already ordered the Indie folk and Latin Percussion EZX packs. Do those come with a lot of patterns and fills I can use?
I do like the way the patterns are laid out. Intro/verse/chorus/fills/etc. but I’m not finding the midi packs that do it for me!
Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated!

Thanked by: jmsrgomesFirst, you will need either EZD2 or S3 to use and EZX that you purchased. The expansion packs won’t work without the sampler.
Second, once you have EZD2 or S3, you can use the Show Webshop MIDI in the Groove browser and search and audition the entire Toontrack MIDI library (whether you own them or not) to find grooves you’re looking for.
Also, you can use the Edit Play Style function in the sampler to adjust busy MIDI grooves to something much simpler (or vice versa).
