I know you guys are focussing more on producers and studios on the drum samples themselves, but could you start building some libraries of specific drummers?
The reason I’m asking is because the drummer themselves is just as important as the kit, every drummer has their own feel that dramatically shapes the records they are on. Every MIDI library has obligatory Bonham-like covers but they are just that, covers. You have a great opportunity (I might say even to an extent obligation) to immortalize the performances of actual drummers as they play naturally. We’ve already lost the opportunity to get a Hal Blaine MIDI pack as well as many others, which makes me cry inside. I’d love to see MIDI packs for legendary and active session drummers with them revisiting some highlights of their careers.
At the same time you’d be doing the world a service if you did do this, by capturing the detail that may not make it into SD for a couple of versions but that may one day and can help archive the performances. Stuff like using better than MIDI resolution for the data recording, and added detail like hit duration (not just initial velocity) and even hit location on the heads (maybe just use a high-speed camera on the drums with colored stick heads to record this, as that can always be tracked later and wouldn’t interfere with the feel for the drummer).
