…or I am completely missing something, in which case I desperately need to figure this out.
I have multiple products and many expansions and while Toontrack has some of the most user friendly software on the planet, the installation and update process is well…kind of the opposite of that.
Here are my gripes:
1. No download for the full install of Superior Drummer. You are forced to keep precious media around if you ever reinstall, in which event you are forced to “insert disk x of x” for hours on end if you have enough stuff. 10 years ago this was the norm, but these days SD is the only title that I still do this with.
2. The update page appears to be “disconnected” — as in it does not know what I actually have installed. It just knows what I downloaded and alerts me if there is anything new. However, if for some reason I download an update and forget to install it, I will no longer be alerted that I’m out of sync.
3. Multiple updates are a huge pain. Here is my workflow (which is probably as efficient as it gets given the circumstances):
a. Go to the update page, and click all the products that say “update available”
b. Clear the contents of my “Downloads” folder on my machine
c. Download anything that has a little red download icon
d. “Select All” for the downloads folder and open them all
e. Go to each window one by one and install them, must type my password each time
f. Right-click and eject the drive, that way I can keep track of which ones are complete
4. Following the above workflow, for some reason some of the updates are actually uninstallers?
What Toontrack needs is a little utility, where I enter my account info, and it can do 2 things — answer the question, “Is everything current?” and perform the operation, “Make everything current” That could save your users a ton of headache. I would imagine there are plenty of people who just skip the updates entirely due to this (I’ve considered doing the same myself).
Line 6 have a tool which works similarly to what you’re requesting (Line 6 Monkey). It’s a utility that looks at all of the Line 6 software/packs/drivers on your system, and checks what is not up to date, and let’s you easily update it right there in the program. It’s not the best tool, as you can’t just go “Select All”, and “Update”, so you have to select an item and hit update, wait for it to finish, and move on to the next item. But hey, it could be a lot worse! 😛
Also, I completely agree with you about the SD disc issues. Once upon a time they were considered large downloads, but if you happen to play games on Steam, then the SD libraries are not that big in comparison to some of the software you’re downloading there. Full downloads for the Superior libraries would be brilliant!
Cheers,
Darren
