I have a Roland TD-6v kit with an FD-8 HiHat pedal. Currently the HiHat registers as “open” unless I stamp down on the pedal as hard as I can and don’t let up at all. I’ve tried all the Pedal Correction* settings, and setting the Velocity Ctrl curve for hatsCtrl manually, and nothing seems to change its behavior at all.
I’ve loaded SD as a plugin in Reaper and attached a second plugin** that monitors the MIDI signals coming from the pedal so I can verify at what pedal “velocity” the hi hat’s sound changes. No matter which Pedal Correction setting I use, or even if I set the Velocity Ctrl curve manually, it goes from open to tight at about 90 (out of a max of 127), with nothing, or maybe a very tiny interval, in between; and yes, the little blue box next to Velocity Ctrl is ticked on. The behavior is the same in Toontrack Solo, so I know the problem isn’t being caused by Reaper.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to troubleshoot this further? The way it works currently is barely playable, and with a performance coming up soon I’m starting to get very nervous. 🙁 90 might normally be a reasonable a place for the hat to start closing, but this pedal doesn’t get there until I’m pressing down really hard, so I want it to start closing closer to 30 (or getting to 90 with less pressure).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!!
* In case anyone’s unfamiliar with this setting and is looking for it, Pedal Correction can be found under the Presets/MIDI menu at the bottom of the Mapping page. I mention this because the manual, at least the version I have, incorrectly says it’s on the Load/Save at the top of the page (section 7.3). May you have better luck with it than I!
** If anyone’s interested, the plugin I’m using is Robin Schmidt’s Midi Monitor, which has proven really useful. It’s available along with a bunch of others http://www.rs-met.com/freebies.html.
Hi,
please make sure you have the latest manual, available from your Toontrack account. It should read 2.3 on the front page.
Are your Superior 2 plugin updated to version 2.3.1? The version number is displayed at the top of the plugin interface.
If you monitor the incoming MIDI CC curve and it seems steep and restricted, you need to check for the cause in your hardware and host software before applying HH CC curve correction Presets.
IIRC, the TD6 has, as other Roland modules, a setting that can switch the CC max from 90 to 127, i.e. a higher resolution for the curve. Next, you also need to check for any other setting that can affect the outgoing MIDI.
After that, make sure no MIDI filtering is going on in your host.
Next, I would apply the ‘E-drums’ MIDI Preset and then try with the curves.
127 should be fully closed tight and 0 max open.
BR,
John
