Really need 4 gig to have a totally comfortable system- It can be done on 2 gig.
I wonder what speed your drive is but mostly what Daw and Interface settings you are using,
have you got other things running in the background at the same time ?

2 gig is not really a lot , should be ok though
these days to have a decent SD2 kit with All bleeds and Rooms and a Virtual Bass,Organ and Piano and E piano with some nice FX all running smoothly you would want more like 8 gig and upwards.
But with latency and crackling that could point in other directions, generally if you go down to a lower buffer like 64 or less you make start to get some crackling.noise.
I try to run around 128.
If you have an Insert FX like a special compressor or EQ on you Master outs that can throw things right off
I have the Universal Audio’s UAD2 Duo and if i use anything at all it runs delay/latency of unplayable proportions so i can only use them in a mix.
They do use a 32 bit bridge as i am in 64 bit but that is an example.

You have no details filled in about your system so it is hard to know anything more specific.
