Well, while I do hope that the next release is an SDX, I’d like to know what you’re basing this decision on. Did Toontrack say that they were releasing an ethnic percussion SDX next, or are you just speculating?

    My guess …..

Why one SDX or another EZX release? Why not a major update for Superior Drummer app to version 3.0? There are many things to do:

    – Reorganizing/improve efficiency the GUI for live/real-time working also with touch screens. (for example if you touch a fader/button a pop-up window will zoom this fader/button to realize sensitive movements)

    – A Must Have option: For instruments with many different articulations especially for HiHat /Snare there should be a visual controlling window which shows in real-time incoming CC Data and what articulation just in time is sounding for this instrument when you hitting.

    – For this there should be also in the same window a possibility to adjust the relationship between incoming CC Data values and assigned articulations to optimize the playable feel. (Please look to fxpansion bfd stuff and you know what I mean)

    – Additional to this there should be also a adjustable “cross fade” function in between all relevant articulations to make it more natural sounding. (Especially for the HiHat open to fully closed articulations) Such a function you have in NI Battery since years.

    – Of course we need a real-time “Midi Monitor” with all information for incoming data and midi notes. (For example velocity values)

    – The Gentleman from Toontrack should thinking about a “Auto Mode” function which analysis incoming midi/controller data to one selected instrument and make after a while analysing one self-acting preset for optimal Trigger/Sensitive and Dynamic values/settings for corresponding instrument. Of course able to edit this settings manual after deselect “Auto Mode” for fine tuning.

    – The next step would be probably one total new function inside Superior Drummer to convert incoming analog piezo signals to midi commands. Audio-Interfaces with 8 analog inputs plus one or two ADAT inputs are not rare this times and IMHO payable. (For example RME Interfaces) Please see here: http://www.audiofront.net/index.php how to realizing with software. Of course there must be a solution to get all the CC Data information right in the box. The consequence to this: You don’t need any more modules or Drum To Midi Interfaces! Say good bye to ROLAND wishes them a good journey back to the (technical) 90th’s

Side effect to this: No more noticeable latency values before the digital midi data come to Superior Drummer. (Just the A/D converter with maximum 1ms) Please notice that all Modules for example from ROLAND produce latency values to 3-4ms to midi-out port! This is not optimal for using Superior Drummer in real-time mode.

If I think about those internal software triggering solution optimized for Superior Drummer I wood expect famously, smoothly playable trigger results for Superior Drummer. Is this just a dream? Or perhaps soon reality?

So we should say there are many significant upcoming features to the next Superior Drummer generation. Let’s do!

    Thanks for watching greats

Just wanted to point out that our intention is that you should do that with the
velocity transform of the hatsCtrl Articulation. Just incase you had missed
that, but perhaps you find it inadequate.

That’s maybe the right word for this: A little bit “inadequate”

To control personally the HiHat open to fully closed articulations with CC Data you first have to know what actually articulation is right now sounding. Then you have to know which CC 4 values is triggering which articulation. (For example CC 4 value 105-127 is triggering fully closed) Yes you can use the “velocity transform” for “hatsCtrl” in SD but this is not really comfortable in use. If you have a visual window which is able to highlight the sounding articulation in real-time you can see exactly what’s happen when you move the HiHat foot up and down. Please see potential solution for this here:

My wish list for the next version of Superior:

      [*] A tape/tube saturation emulation insert
      [*] A convolution reverb insert
[*] The ability to filter/search on MIDI grooves
[*] A better way to alter velocity of a MIDI groove than a simple knob. Should be able to focus on specific pieces (e.g. hihat) and also, bring bottom velocities up or down while keeping top velocities stationary (expansion), and move top velocities down or up while keeping bottom velocities stationary (compression). Also should be able to do a gradient change across time, for instance gradually increase volume towards the end. Should also include a simple reset to set all velocity offsets back to 0.
[*] Incorporate the EZPlayer stuff (tracks, format conversion) directly into Superior. Also, when I have a set of tracks from different MIDI grooves, I shouldn’t have to then record them to some other track in the plug-in, I should be able to drag my collection of tracks into the host as one.

Interesting that you think C&V is ‘an American vibe’ and not a ‘super small room’.

Hehe…I think C&V can work just fine for American rock, Indie stuff…and really, look where all those drums came from. Never mind the drummer, engineer, and recording studio.

It’s really non-denominational in sound. I don’t hear the same small room as Americana or Claustrophobic. Do you disagree?

I guess you were there, and all other things being equal, your credentials trump mine 🙂

I’m just saying that between Music City and C & V, there may not be an immediate need for an Americana-type SDX. I’m looking at room elsewhere for things that haven’t been covered, so an Ethnic SDX comes to mind. I’m in.

That’s cool, but if it comes down to it, personally, I’d much rather have C&V 2 over an “ethnic” kit. I mean…if I have to vote either/or. Now, if Toontrack plans to never release a version 2 of C&V, i might (one day) put some money down on an “ethnic” kit.

I wouldn’t mind a C&V 2 either, though C&V is very deep on its own. For C&V 2 I’d go really vintage and nail the sound of the 50’s and 60’s down to the recording nuances. Motown, Memphis, early Abbey Road.

C&V by nature doesn’t sound as modern as Avatar, Allaire, or Hit Factory, nor should it, though with some proper drum selection, compression and mixing it can certainly be brought into the 80’s and 90’s. You just can’t as easily take it backwards in time.

In my estimation taking it back towards 1960 involves some fairly radical EQ kung fu and adding some saturation in a way that Superior is not capable of. I must admit though that a lot of my failures in getting an older sound on a modern recording have less to do with not having the right drum sample set and more to do with nearly everything else.

One challenge may be that an engineer might not want to carve out the kick sample like one would sound in 1960, for instance. A user can’t add that back in later. Better maybe to record them well and provide proper presets for the era. Or do you just go authentic and that’s what you get?

Anyone else think a few kits from the 50’s recorded at Sun Studio would be a nice addition to the SDX line?

Specially for this I go with you!

Current plug ins inside SD are results to relationship/partnership with Sonalksis. At this moment Sonalksis do not offer such a tape/tube simulation or a reverb plug in. Nevertheless, it would be nice to have those features inside SD.
