Hi
I’m looking at going down the SD2 route for live gigs in the near future..
I’m running a TD20KX and a SPD30 with a Macbook PRO 2011 i5.
Could do with some advice on which sound card / MIDI connectivity would be best suited for the job (firewire or USB) etc? Also which DAW should I use?
Also any experiences of using SD2 for live gigging would be most appreciated..
Thanks in advance
Darren
I run my Hart Pro/TD-12 kit with an MBox Pro 3rd gen which runs OK, nothing fancy, but I’ve heard that Damian (QA in Betatesting) runs an RME Babyface with his TD20 kit at extremely low latency.
Any new ASIO/Core Audio high-speed USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt interface will most likely cut it.

John’s correct – I am currently using an RME Babyface and can reliably achieve very low latencies, for example 14 samples in Reaper. The RME interfaces are expensive but their drivers are very well written and they perform very consistently. I have previously used an Apogee One which sounded great and I could achieve a buffer of 32 samples. I have also seen the ESI interfaces deliver good results.
I haven’t taken my set-up out on the road, I’m using a Mac Pro, but I can’t see why there would be any problems using any of the above in a mobile set-up.

Thanks John and Damian for the advice, most appreciated!
Think the RME Babyface at £400+ is more than I want to pay to be honest. The Apogee One looks good and I also quite like the look of the M Audio Fast Track Pro.. I suppose it all comes down to the latency side of things and reliability for taking it on the road. Any experience with the M Audio guys?

Darren
Hi Damian
I went for the RME babyface in the end following your advice. I’m really struggling getting everything working at the minute using protools 10.
Can you give me a basic set up advice please connecting the RME via the TD20 MIDI to the Mac? Not sure what I’m doing wrong??
Thanks in advance
Darren
I’ve got the player set up in Pro Tools but it’s mainly the midi side of things. How do I set the RME up with the MAC to trigger the TD20?
I’ve only downloaded Pro Tools 10 today and the RME only landed yesterday so I’m a complete novice on both bits of kit..
Cheers
Darren
So just to clarify you’ve managed to get S2 to appear in pro tools and you’re getting sound out of the babyface when clicking on the drum pads in S2?
If so then you just have to connect the MIDI output of your TD-20 to the MIDI input on the babyface. If you then hit a drum pad S2 should play in pro-tools. If not check that the babyface MIDI input is enabled in pro-tools by going to the Setup drop-down menu selecting MIDI then Input devices and ensuring the corresponding box is checked.

Hi Darren,
the Babyface seems to need drivers to operate under OSX. I see that RME posted new OSX drivers fairly recently and it might be worth checking the Flash update too. It being a new purchase, shouldn’t require the Flash update but you never know.
