I guess no one “official” is going to respond.  I’m a PC guy, so I have no idea what kind of on-board audio device a Macbook Pro has.  That will be the deciding factor in whether or not you’ll need a soundcard.  For example, most PCs have a RealTek audio card that you can’t adjust the buffer size in, and the latency is bad.  You have to use ASIO drivers, and people have had mixed results.  I think there’s a Mac equivalent to ASIO but the name escapes me at the moment — use Google.  The MIDI-to-USB is no problem.  I’ve got my V-drums hooked directly into my audio interface, but also have a drumKAT for percussion and I use a M-Audio Uno for that.  Don’t know if it’s Mac or not though.  But it works just fine.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I thought I read somewhere that the macbook sound card was sufficient to use directly. I tried to find the post again but I couldn’t. Hopefully someone can confirm. Do you recommend a specific brand/model for the MIDI to USB cable?

The Macbook soundcard may be sufficient, I’ve no idea.  I’ve got a friend who uses Macs and I’ll ask him.  It’s probably going to be important that you be able to lower the buffer size on your soundcard, and you usually can’t do that with off-the-shelf computers.  M-Audio and Edirol both make nice, inexpensive MIDI-to-USB cables.  Don’t go for one of the real cheap ones you see on ebay.

    Hi,
I ran S2.0 on a 2007 Macbook (non pro) with no audio interface just fine. All I had was a midi->usb cable and the internal sound card. Played great.
