I am totally a newbie.
Can I use electric drums ($500 or less) as triggers into ezdrummer to use the drum/cymbal sounds in ezdrummer to create my own drum sound track(s) in a DAW?
What other type of hardware/software would I need to do this other than ezdrummer, set of e-drums, DAW like mixcraft or Garage Band?
Can you describe for me how the connections would be made among various hardware that I might need?
Thanks
If i understood your question correctly a rough chart would be:
E-drum kit with trig to midi converter (“brain”, comes with most kits today) midi out into Soundcard’s midi in.
Any recording app, such as garage band, cubase, sonar and so on, will do.
That’s pretty much it.
I don’t have a midi in socket on the computer… can I somehow use the firewire, usb, or line-in? What do I need to do that?
Can I use an inexpensive ($500) E-drum kit to trigger the sounds in EZDrummer to make my own drum beats input to create drum sounds?
Hi,
MIDI inputs on computers are quite rare. However, many MIDI devices can be used with USB, but you need to check that the particrual device you are considering has USB connection (there is still products out there with only MIDI connection, and in that case you would need a MIDI input, preferably with an external soundcard).
You can use a E-kit under $500 to trigger the sounds, but as with many other things, you get what you pay for. Your drumming experience will in most cases improve the more expensive kit you use. I would also recommend you trying out how well your inbuilt soundcard works, we recommend you using an soundcard designated for music production usage.
You would also need a host program such as Cubase, Pro Tools or similar to record your tracks. If you just want to play drums, you could use Toontrack Solo, our free stand alone host for EZdrummer and Superior Drummer.

You can use a MIDI to USB interface (converter), they are relatively cheap, about £20.00 or so. Something similar to this

You go EKIT> Midi out > USB input on computer.
