I decided to try converting my old Tama StageStar kit to electronic. I ordered the Tama mesh drum heads for the kit for $65 from http://www.TheMusicDen.com and I ordered a set of Triggers from http://musiciansnearyou.com for an insanely inexpensive $150, they arrived yesterday. I got the Tama kit used at a thrift store a couple of years ago and upgraded all the heads & cymbals to something decent.
I still have the old horrible beyond description StageStar hi-hats and cymbals and I decided to try to make them into electronic triggers like the Alesis Surge – metal on one side, something dampening on the other.
I tried some nasty paint-on-rubberizing stuff which is currently drying on my porch – but a few whacks with a stick tells me it still has some ring to it – that nasty awful sound it originally had, just not as bright.
What I really want is to get that same dead-whack effect Alesis got for the Surge hats and cymbals… any ideas what that clearcoat is on the bottom of the Surge, and how to go about applying it?
Also, want to try the Bitumen Tape idea as described in this forum, but don’t know any brand names to search for at my local hardware store…
